Similarity of Triangles

Before you start, make sure you know: Triangles (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

On the Malecón in Santo Domingo, in the middle of the afternoon, a pole and a palm tree cast shadows on the ground. Without climbing the palm tree, how can you tell how tall it is? With triangles, similarity is easy to check: you don't need to compare all three angles and all three sides, just one of three criteria.

Criteria for Similarity of Triangles

Two triangles with the same interior angles and proportional sides with ratio k equal to 1.75 47 same angles → similar k = 7 / 4 = 1.75

Two triangles are similar if their corresponding angles are equal. Check whether the following two triangles are similar by calculating the missing angle in each one:

  • Triangle A has two angles measuring $45^\circ$ and $75^\circ$.

  • Triangle B has two angles measuring $75^\circ$ and $60^\circ$.

Remember that the sum of the interior angles of any triangle is always $180^\circ$.

Finding Unknown Sides

Once you know that two triangles are similar, the similarity ratio $k$ lets you calculate any missing side: $k = \dfrac{\text{side of the new triangle}}{\text{corresponding side of the original}}$. If $k>1$ the triangle gets larger; if $k<1$ it gets smaller.

Thales and Similar Triangles in Problems

Many problems combine Thales' position with similar triangles: parallel beams, structures, two transversals cut by parallel lines. If a line parallel to one side cuts the other two, the small triangle and the large one have the same angles, so they are similar.

Heights with Shadows and Similar Triangles

Here is the answer to the palm tree on the Malecón. The sun's rays arrive parallel, so a vertical object and its shadow form a right triangle with the same angle of the sun's inclination as another vertical object at the same time of day. Two equal angles (the right angle and the sun's angle) are enough: the triangles are similar.
