Data Representation
Yaritza did a survey at her school and has a list of 40 answers about everyone's favorite social network. How does she show the results to her classmates so they understand them at a glance? A well-made graph does that, but a poorly made one can give a false idea of the data.
Population, sample, and variable
Before graphing, you need to know what is being studied. The population is the set of all the individuals of interest. The sample is the part of the population that is actually asked. The individual is each element studied.
The variable is the characteristic that is measured. It can be:
-
Qualitative: a quality (favorite social network, ice cream flavor).
-
Quantitative discrete: separate numbers that are counted (siblings, books read).
-
Quantitative continuous: values in an interval (height, travel time).
The type of variable decides which graph to use.

State the population of this study, the individual, and the type of statistical variable.

In this case, identify:

- b) What is the sample?

In a study on social media use, $40$ teenagers at a high school were asked about their favorite platform. The results obtained are as follows:
-
TikTok: $18$ people.
-
Instagram: $12$ people.
-
YouTube: $6$ people.
-
BeReal: $4$ people.
- a) Identify the population, sample, and type of statistical variable.
- b) Draw up a frequency table including the frequency ($n_i$), relative frequency ($f_i$), and percentage ($\%$) for each value.
- c) Represent the data on a bar graph.
Frequency table
Every graph comes from a table. In it we use:
-
Absolute frequency $n_i$: how many times the value appears.
-
Relative frequency $f_i = \dfrac{n_i}{N}$, where $N$ is the total number of data values.
-
Percentage: $f_i \times 100$.
-
Cumulative frequency $N_i$: the sum of the absolute frequencies up to that value.
The sum of the $n_i$ is $N$; the sum of the $f_i$ is $1$ and the sum of the percentages is $100\%$. Use this to check your work.
Students in a class were asked for the number of siblings they have, obtaining the following data: $1, 0, 2, 1, 1, 0, 3, 2, 1, 1, 0, 2, 1, 4, 1, 0, 2, 1, 1, 2$ Construct…

- b) What percentage of students read $2$ books or fewer?
- c) Draw a frequency polygon over the bar chart of the frequencies.

Pictograph
The pictograph uses a picture that represents a fixed amount of data. It must always show the key: how much each symbol is worth.
The following pictogram shows the number of trees planted by the students of a high school over four years. If each symbol represents $5$ trees, answer the following…

$0$ children: $\triangle \triangle \triangle$
-
$1$ child: $\triangle \triangle \triangle \triangle \triangle$
-
$2$ children: $\triangle \triangle \triangle \triangle$
-
$3$ children or more: $?$
- a) Knowing that the total number of families is $50$, how many families have $3$ children or more? How would you represent that amount on the pictogram?
- b) Calculate the mean, median, and mode of the distribution.
- c) If a family is chosen at random, what is the probability that they have fewer than $2$ children? Represent this situation with a circle graph.
Bar graph and histogram
For qualitative or quantitative discrete variables we use the bar graph, with separated bars of the same width. For continuous data grouped into intervals we use the histogram, with bars that touch.
The class mark of an interval is its midpoint: $x_i = \dfrac{a+b}{2}$. For $[160, 165)$ it is $162.5$. The modal interval is the one with the highest frequency.

The height (in cm) of the $20$ members of a youth basketball club was measured. Being a continuous variable, the data have been grouped into the following intervals:
$[160, 165), [165, 170), [170, 175), [175, 180), [180, 185]$.

Frequency polygon
The frequency polygon summarizes how numerical data are distributed. It is built like this:
-
Draw the bar graph or the histogram.
-
Mark the midpoint of the top edge of each bar (in a histogram, above the class mark).
-
Connect the points with line segments.
-
If you want to close it, connect the ends to the horizontal axis.

- c) Estimate the mean reaction time from the histogram data.
- d) What percentage of athletes have a reaction time of less than $0.20$ seconds?
You can do it on paper and send a photo with your answer.
Pie chart
The pie chart divides the total (100%) into sectors. The angle of each sector is proportional to its frequency:
$$\alpha = f_i \times 360^\circ = \frac{360^\circ \times n_i}{N}$$This is because the full circle, $360^\circ$, represents all of the data.
You can also work backward: if a sector measures $72^\circ$ out of a total of 200 families, it corresponds to $\dfrac{72}{360} \times 200 = 40$ families.
To represent the results of a survey about preferred ice cream flavors on a circle graph, we need to calculate the angles for each section. If we know that $10$ out of a…
To represent the results of a survey about preferred ice cream flavors on a circle graph, we need to calculate the angles for each section. If we know that $10$ out of a total of $40$ people like chocolate, what angle size in degrees ($^\circ$) will the sector corresponding to chocolate have?

Line graph and two-way tables
The line graph shows how a quantity changes over time: the points are marked and connected in order.
A two-way table classifies individuals according to two characteristics at the same time. The row and column totals let you fill in missing data: each row and each column adds up to its total. To compare the data, we use a grouped bar graph: two bars (for example, boys and girls) for each category.

Misleading graphs
The same data, drawn with a vertical axis that does not start at 0 or is very "stretched," can look like a huge increase or almost flat. Before interpreting a graph, look at the numbers on the axes.

More graphs: cumulative and box-and-whisker
A cumulative frequency bar graph shows $N_i$. To recover the absolute frequencies, subtract: $n_i = N_i - N_{i-1}$. The last bar gives the total $N$. The median is the value where the cumulative frequency reaches half of $N$.
The box-and-whisker plot summarizes the data with five values: minimum, $Q_1$, median, $Q_3$, and maximum. The box goes from $Q_1$ to $Q_3$ and contains the middle 50% of the data; the length of the box measures its spread. To the left of $Q_1$ is 25% of the data, and to the right of $Q_3$ another 25%.
