Approximation and Rounding

Before you start, make sure you know: Approximation and Rounding (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Percents (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

The sensor at a weather station shows a humidity of $64.38\,\%$, already rounded. Between which two values was the real reading? And if the Voyager 1 probe is $2.348 \times 10^{10}$ km away and an astronomer says "about $2.3 \times 10^{10}$ km," how far off is that, and is it a lot or a little? We will answer both questions using the rounding interval, the absolute error, and the relative error.

The value of each digit

To approximate, you need to know what place each digit occupies. To the right of the decimal point come the tenths, the hundredths, the thousandths, and so on.

Places of the number 58.347: tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. . 5 8 3 4 7 tens ones tenths hundredths thousandths

In $58.347$ the tenths are worth $3$ (that is, $0.3$), the hundredths are worth $4$ ($0.04$), and the thousandths are worth $7$ ($0.007$).

You can also read a decimal on the number line: each space between two whole numbers is divided into $10$ equal parts (tenths), and each of those into another $10$ (hundredths).

Truncating and rounding

To approximate is to replace a number with another one that is shorter and easier to work with. There are two common ways to do it.

Comparison between truncating and rounding the number 4.576 to the hundredths: truncating gives 4.57 and rounding gives 4.58. 4.576 to the hundredths truncate 4.57 the 6 is cut off round 4.58 the 6 is 5 or more: round up

Rounding down, rounding up, and repeating decimals

An approximation is a lower approximation (rounded down) if it is less than the real value, and an upper approximation (rounded up) if it is greater. Truncating is always a lower approximation (for positive numbers). Rounding can be either type.

Number Rounding to the tenths Type
$2.34$ $2.3$ lower (goes down)
$2.37$ $2.4$ upper (goes up)

Repeating decimals and irrational numbers never end, so they always have to be approximated. For example, $\pi = 3.14159265\ldots$ and $0.\widehat{3} = 0.3333\ldots$

Estimating with rounding

Rounding is useful for doing quick mental math. At the corner store, for example, nobody adds up cents: you round to whole pesos.

You can also estimate areas by rounding the measurements before multiplying. A square with side $5.2$ cm is estimated with side $5$ and area $5 \times 5 = 25$ cm²; the real area is $5.2 \times 5.2 = 27.04$ cm². Rounding before operating builds up error.

The real interval behind a rounding

If you see a rounded value, the original data could be any number in a whole interval: the numbers that, when rounded, give exactly that result.

Number line with the interval of real values that round to 64.38: from 64.375 included to 64.385 excluded. 64.375 (included) 64.385 (excluded) value on screen: 64.38

Go back to the beginning: the sensor that reads $64.38\,\%$ rounded to the hundredths, so the real humidity was in $[64.375,\ 64.385)$.

Absolute error and relative error

Approximating always costs some precision. The absolute error measures the difference in the same units as the data. The relative error compares that error with the size of the real value, and that is why it can be given as a percent.

Number line with the approximate value 2.3 and the real value 2.348, and the distance between them as an absolute error of 0.048. approx. 2.3 real value 2.348 absolute error = 0.048

The error is useful for comparing two approximations: the one with the smaller absolute error is the more precise one (if you are approximating the same number). For the area of a figure, calculate the exact value, the value using the approximated measurements, and subtract in absolute value.
