Yaritza sells phone cases in two stores. Depending on the number $x$ of new models that arrive, the first store has $P(x) = 5x^2 + 3x - 4$ cases and the second has $Q(x) = 2x^2 - 5x + 8$. How many cases does she have in total? To answer, you need to know how to add polynomials. We'll solve it at the end of the page.

Parts and numerical value

A polynomial is a sum of monomials. Before operating, identify its parts in $P(x) = -7x^4 + 2x^3 - x + 12$:

  • Terms: each monomial. Here there are 4.

  • Degree: the largest exponent with a nonzero coefficient. Here it is 4.

  • Leading coefficient: the coefficient of the highest-degree term. Here it is $-7$.

  • Constant term: the one without $x$. Here it is $12$.

The numerical value is obtained by substituting a number for $x$ and following the order of operations (first exponents, then products, and finally additions and subtractions).

Adding and subtracting polynomials

You add (or subtract) the like terms, that is, the ones with the same variable part. It helps to line them up in columns, like the addition problems you learned in elementary school:

Sum of two polynomials arranged in vertical columns according to the degree of their terms. degree 2degree 1degree 0 P(x) =5x²+3x− 4 Q(x) =2x²−5x+ 8 P + Q =7x²−2x+ 4 each column, one degree

Rule: you add the coefficients and the variable part stays the same. You can only combine terms with the same variable part.

Number times polynomial and unknown polynomial

A number also multiplies every term. This is how you combine polynomials such as $3A(x) - 2B(x)$: first you multiply, then you subtract.

If a polynomial is missing in an equality, you solve for it just as in an equation: what is added gets subtracted.

Monomial times polynomial

Combined operations

When an expression mixes products with additions or subtractions, you follow the order of operations: first you expand the products, then you remove the parentheses (carefully if there is a minus sign in front), and finally you combine the like terms.

Areas are calculated with these operations: if you remove a part from a large figure, you subtract the polynomials of the two areas.
