Polyhedra
A domino, a shoebox, a computer tower, the pyramids we see in books. All of these are polyhedra: solids whose faces are polygons, with no curved surface at all. How can we tell whether a "made-up" polyhedron can really exist? By the end of the section on Euler, you'll know.
Elements of a polyhedron
Rotate the cube and count its faces, edges and vertices:
A polyhedron is convex if, when you rest it on any one of its faces, the whole solid lies on the same side of that face (it has no "dents").

An architect is designing a new glass display for a shopping center in the shape of a right pentagonal prism. Look at the drawing and answer the following questions to help them with the material inventory:
- a) How many faces does the prism have in total?
- b) How many vertices does the figure have?
- c) How many edges are there in total?
Prisms
A prism has two equal, parallel bases, and its lateral faces are parallelograms (rectangles if the prism is right, which is the kind you'll use). It is named after the polygon of its base.
If the bases are rectangles, the prism is called a rectangular prism (a box, like a shoebox). If in addition all the faces are squares, it is a cube.

Pyramids
A pyramid has a single base and triangular lateral faces that meet at one point, the apex. It is also named after its base. It is regular if the base is a regular polygon and the lateral faces are equal isosceles triangles.

Net of a polyhedron
If you cut a cardboard box along some edges and open it flat on the table, you get its net: the faces joined in a single flat piece. With it you can rebuild the solid by folding along the edges.
The cube has $6$ square faces, so its net has $6$ squares joined along their sides. But not every arrangement closes into a cube:

You can do it on paper and send a photo with your answer.
Regular polyhedra
A polyhedron is regular if all its faces are the same regular polygon and the same number of edges meet at every vertex. Only five exist:
| Polyhedron | Faces | Shape of the faces | Edges per vertex |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tetrahedron | 4 | triangles | 3 |
| Cube (hexahedron) | 6 | squares | 3 |
| Octahedron | 8 | triangles | 4 |
| Dodecahedron | 12 | pentagons | 3 |
| Icosahedron | 20 | triangles | 5 |
Why only five? At least $3$ faces must meet at a vertex, and the angles that come together must add up to less than $360°$ (if they add up to $360°$, the figure lies flat). With triangles ($60°$ angle) $3$, $4$ or $5$ faces fit: $180°$, $240°$, $300°$. With $6$ triangles the sum would be $360°$: flat. With squares ($90°$) only $3$ fit ($270°$). With pentagons ($108°$) only $3$ ($324°$). With hexagons ($120°$), $3$ faces already add up to $360°$: there is no polyhedron.

Diagonal, area and volume with Pythagoras
Many polyhedron problems are solved by finding a right triangle inside the solid.
The slant height of a pyramid is the height of a lateral face; the height of the pyramid goes from the apex to the center of the base. With the apothem of the base $a_b$ (half the side in a square base), $ap^2 = h^2 + a_b^2$ holds.

An artisan jewellery company wants to make a silver pendant in the shape of a regular octahedron. If each edge of the octahedron measures $12\text{ mm}$, calculate the total surface area of silver needed to cover the pendant (the total area). Hint: Remember that a regular octahedron is made up of eight congruent equilateral triangles. You will first need to calculate the height of one of these triangles using Pythagoras' theorem.

An architect has designed a skylight for a shopping mall in the shape of a regular square pyramid. The base is a square with sides of $6\text{ m}$. If the area of the glass surface (the lateral surface area of the pyramid) is $60\text{ m}^2$, calculate the actual height of the pyramid from the center of the base to the apex. Note: Be careful; you must first find the apothem of the pyramid using the lateral surface area and then apply the Pythagorean theorem to find the height.

Frustum of a pyramid
If you cut a pyramid with a plane parallel to the base and remove the top part, what remains is a frustum of a pyramid. It has two parallel bases (the larger base $B$ and the smaller base $b$, of the same polygon but different size) and its lateral faces are trapezoids. In a regular square frustum, the bases are squares and the trapezoids are equal.
The slant height of the frustum is the height of one of those trapezoids. It is obtained from a right triangle whose legs are the height $h$ of the frustum and the horizontal distance $\dfrac{B - b}{2}$:

Extension: Euler's formula
Knowing two of the three values ($F$, $V$, $E$), you can always calculate the third. Sometimes you first have to count the edges from the sides of the faces.

- a) According to Euler's Theorem ($C + V = A + 2$), how many vertices must the 3D model have for it to be geometrically possible?
- b) If the final polyhedron turns out to be a cuboctahedron (a polyhedron made up of squares and equilateral triangles) and we know that exactly $4$ edges meet at each of its vertices, check whether your result from part a) matches the real structure of this solid. To do so, count the edges from the number of vertices and the number of edges that meet at each one.
