Rational Numbers. Concept

Before you start, make sure you know: Concept (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Fractions. Equivalent fractions. (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

At a corner store in La Vega, Yaritza asks for $\frac{3}{4}$ of a pound of cheese and $\frac{5}{8}$ of a pound of ham. Which of the two purchases weighs more? To answer, you need to know what a rational number is and how rational numbers are compared. At the end of the page we come back to this question.

What a fraction is and how fractions are classified

A fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ splits a whole into $b$ equal parts and takes $a$ of them. The denominator ($b$) tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The numerator ($a$) tells you how many of those parts are taken.

Bar divided into 8 equal parts with 3 parts shaded, representing the fraction 3/8. 3 parts taken 8 parts in total

If the pizza has 8 slices and you eat 3, you ate $\frac{3}{8}$ of the pizza. To find out what part is left, subtract: $\frac{8}{8} - \frac{3}{8} = \frac{5}{8}$.

A fraction can also be used to take a part of a quantity: divide the quantity by the denominator and multiply by the numerator.

According to its size, a positive fraction can be one of three types:

Type Condition Example Value
Proper numerator < denominator $\frac{3}{5}$ less than 1
Equal to one numerator = denominator $\frac{5}{5}$ equal to 1
Improper numerator > denominator $\frac{7}{4}$ greater than 1

The set ℚ within the real numbers

Every natural number is an integer, every integer is rational, and every rational number is a real number: $\mathbb{N} \subset \mathbb{Z} \subset \mathbb{Q} \subset \mathbb{R}$. The real numbers also include numbers that are not rational (the irrational numbers, such as $\pi$ or $\sqrt{2}$). You will see them on the page about decimals.

Every integer is rational: $5 = \frac{5}{1}$ and $-2 = \frac{-4}{2}$. A fraction whose numerator is a multiple of the denominator is really an integer: $\frac{15}{3} = 5$.

Equivalent fractions and irreducible fractions

Two fractions are equivalent if they represent the same quantity. You get them by multiplying (amplifying) or dividing (simplifying) the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number.

$$\frac{2}{3} = \frac{2 \times 4}{3 \times 4} = \frac{8}{12} \qquad \frac{18}{24} = \frac{18 : 6}{24 : 6} = \frac{3}{4}$$

Two fractions $\frac{a}{b}$ and $\frac{c}{d}$ are equivalent if the cross products are equal: $a \times d = b \times c$. That is why cross products are used to find an unknown term.

The irreducible fraction is the one that can no longer be simplified. You get it by dividing the numerator and denominator by their G.C.F.

Simplifying is useful for comparing proportions. If one team makes 30 of 50 shots and another makes 21 of 35, both simplify to $\frac{3}{5}$: they have the same proportion of successful shots.

Negative fractions: opposite, inverse, and absolute value

A fraction can be negative. The minus sign can go in front, in the numerator, or in the denominator:

$$-\frac{3}{4} = \frac{-3}{4} = \frac{3}{-4}$$

An integer $n$ is the fraction $\frac{n}{1}$, so its inverse is $\frac{1}{n}$. Zero has no inverse.

Comparing and ordering rational numbers

With the same denominator, the one with the greater numerator is greater: $\frac{4}{7} < \frac{6}{7}$.

With the same numerator, the one with the smaller denominator is greater (bigger parts): $\frac{3}{2} > \frac{3}{5}$.

In general, rewrite them over a common denominator using the L.C.M. of the denominators. Another option is to use cross products: $\frac{a}{b} < \frac{c}{d}$ if $a \times d < b \times c$ (with $b, d > 0$).

With signs: every negative number is less than every positive number. Between two negatives, the one with the greater absolute value is less. On the number line, the lesser one is farther to the left.

If there are decimals, convert them all to the same form. A fraction is converted to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator: $-\frac{9}{4} = -2.25$. A repeating decimal such as $2.1666\ldots = 2.1\overline{6}$ is also rational: it equals $\frac{13}{6}$. Remember that $-|{-2.2}| = -2.2$.

Between any two fractions there is always another one. You can amplify to make room, or average: the fraction at the midpoint is $\frac{1}{2}\left(\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d}\right)$.

Problems with fractions

When several fractions split the same whole, add up the parts and subtract them from the unit ($1 = \frac{n}{n}$). For "a fraction of what is left," first find what is left and then multiply: $\frac{a}{b}$ of $\frac{c}{d}$ is $\frac{a \times c}{b \times d}$.

In geometric figures, count how many equal pieces fit in the total. If a regular hexagon is divided into 6 equal triangles and one of them into 4 small triangles, each one is $\frac{1}{4}$ of $\frac{1}{6}$ of the hexagon, that is, $\frac{1}{24}$.

For unit fractions (numerator 1), try denominators that divide the L.C.M. For example, $\frac{5}{6} = \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3}$, because $\frac{3}{6} + \frac{2}{6} = \frac{5}{6}$.
