Exercises and Applications of Similarity
Yaritza wants to know how tall the Monumento de Santiago is, but she can't climb it to measure it. With a shadow, a ruler, and a little proportionality, she can find out. On this page you will learn to use similarity as a tool, and at the end you will see how to solve that kind of problem.
Scales: Plans, Maps, and Models
A plan, a map, or a scale model is always similar to the real thing. The scale is the similarity ratio and is written $1 : n$: each unit in the drawing represents $n$ real units.

Photos, Screens, and Similar Figures
Two photos, two screens, or two rectangles are similar if they keep the same shape: the width and the height grow in the same proportion.

Parallel Lines and Thales' Theorem
When several parallel lines cut two other lines, the segments they determine are proportional. This also happens with two triangles "in Thales position": one inside the other, with one side parallel.
In the following figure, lines $r$ and $s$ are intersected by three lines parallel to each other. Knowing that the segments on line $r$ measure $AB = 3 \text{ cm}$ and…

To renovate the design of a bookcase, a carpenter places three parallel shelves intersected by two side batten rails, as shown in the figure. If the measurements of the segments on one of the battens are $AB = 25$ cm and $BC = 40$ cm, and on the other batten the segment corresponding to $AB$ measures $A'B' = 30$ cm, how long will segment $B'C'$ be?
Measuring Heights: Shadows, Mirrors, and Lines of Sight
At the same time of day, the Sun makes the same angle with everything it lights. An object with its shadow and another object with its own shadow form two similar right triangles.
You can also use a mirror on the ground: the light that reaches the mirror bounces off at the same angle at which it arrives, so two similar right triangles are formed.
Back to the beginning: Yaritza measures the Monumento using its shadow. If a $2$ m pole casts a $1.5$ m shadow and the Monumento casts a $60$ m shadow, its height is $\dfrac{2 \times 60}{1.5} = 80$ m.

Similar Areas and Volumes
If two solids are similar with ratio $k$, lengths are multiplied by $k$, but areas and volumes grow faster.

Combined Problems
Many problems mix several ideas: first you draw, identify the similar triangles, set up the proportion, and, if needed, use Pythagoras or $k^2$.
