Ratio and Proportion

Before you start, make sure you know: Fractions. Equivalent fractions. (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

On your school's volleyball team there are 5 boys and 7 girls. In a rice recipe, for every 2 cups of rice you use 3 cups of water. In both cases we compare two quantities by dividing: that is a ratio, and if two ratios are equal, they form a proportion.

Ratio between two quantities

In a school domino tournament there are 16 first-year students and 24 second-year students. The first-year to second-year ratio is $\frac{16}{24} = \frac{2}{3}$: for every 2 first-years, there are 3 second-years.

Diagram showing the ratio 16 to 24 by grouping the elements into 2 blue circles for every 3 orange ones, equivalent to the ratio 2 to 3. 16 first-years24 second-years ratio 16 : 24 = 2 : 3

Ratios with units: rates and comparisons

Sometimes the two quantities have different units. The ratio is then called a rate and is read "per": pesos per item, kilometers per hour, inhabitants per km².

To compare two ratios you can convert them to decimals or rewrite them with a common denominator. For example, $\frac{7}{12}$ and $\frac{5}{8}$: with denominator 24 they become $\frac{14}{24}$ and $\frac{15}{24}$, so $\frac{5}{8}$ is greater.

Proportions: equality of ratios

Diagram of two equal ratios with crossed arrows connecting extremes and means to illustrate the cross products rule. 3 8 = 15 x extremes: 3 · x means: 8 · 15 = 120

The rule of three

When one term of the proportion is missing, we use the rule of three: arrange the data in two rows, one for each situation, with each quantity in its own column, and complete the proportion.

Plan (cm) Real (m)
3 8
15 $x$

"3 is to 8 as 15 is to $x$": $\dfrac{3}{8} = \dfrac{15}{x}$. Cross-multiply and solve:

$$3x = 8 \times 15 = 120 \ \Rightarrow\ x = \frac{120}{3} = 40$$

Cross products also work as a check: $3 \times 40 = 120$ and $8 \times 15 = 120$.
