How much is $52 \times 48$ without a calculator? If you notice that $52 = 50 + 2$ and $48 = 50 - 2$, the calculation turns into $50^2 - 2^2 = 2{,}500 - 4 = 2{,}496$. Special products are shortcuts like this: they show up so often that it pays to know them by heart.

Algebraic identities are also useful for performing quick mental calculations with large numbers. Use the difference of two squares identity (product of a sum and a difference) $(a + b) \times (a - b) = a^2 - b^2$ to calculate the following products cleverly:

  1. a) $52 \times 48$ (Hint: consider $50 + 2$ and $50 - 2$)
  1. b) $99 \times 101$
  1. c) $35 \times 25$

Spotting and fixing mistakes

The three identities are easy to mix up. Before applying one, check whether there is a plus sign, a minus sign, or both (one in each factor).

Expression Special product Result
$(x+4)^2$ square of a sum $x^2 + 8x + 16$
$(x-5)(x+5)$ sum times difference $x^2 - 25$
$(2a-3)^2$ square of a difference $4a^2 - 12a + 9$
Comparison that crosses out the mistake (x+4)² = x² + 16, points out that the 8x term is missing, and shows the correct expansion x² + 8x + 16. (x+4)² = x² + 16 the 8x is missing (x+4)² = x² + 8x + 16

A very common mistake when starting with algebraic identities is thinking that the square of a sum is simply the sum of the squares. For example:

Is it true that $(x + 3)^2 = x^2 + 3^2$?

To check this, calculate the numerical value of both expressions for $x = 2$ and explain whether the results are equal or different.

Simplifying algebraic fractions

Factoring with special products lets you simplify fractions with $x$, just as you simplify $\frac{6}{9} = \frac{2 \cdot 3}{3 \cdot 3} = \frac{2}{3}$: you factor the top and the bottom and cancel the common factors.
