Scale of Areas and Volumes

Before you start, make sure you know: Ratio (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Square root (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

Yaritza wants to enlarge a sign for her family's corner store. If she doubles the width and the height, will she pay double for the paper? The similarity ratio $k$ does not affect lengths, areas, and volumes in the same way, and mixing them up gets expensive. At the end of the page you'll see what happens with the sign.

Lengths, areas, and volumes: three different ratios

Three squares with sides of 1, 2, and 3 grid units showing how the area goes from 1 to 4 and to 9 when the side is multiplied by 2 and by 3. side × 1 area × 1 side × 2 area × 4 side × 3 area × 9

State whether the following statements are true or false, giving reasons:

a) If I double the side lengths of a rectangle, I double its area.

b) The ratio of the areas of two similar shapes is the square of the scale factor.

c) If the scale factor of two 3D solids is $2$, the volume of the large one is $8$ times that of the small one.

d) On a plan at scale $1:50$, one square centimeter on the plan represents $50\ \text{cm}^2$ in reality.

Calculating with the ratio of areas

If you know how the area changes and want to find $k$, you take the square root, not divide by $2$.

Two similar rectangles with a 4:3 proportion: the small one with 2,800 cm² and the large one with unknown area, linked by the ratio k. 32" · 2,800 cm² k = ? 48" · ? cm²

Floor plans and scales

On a floor plan at scale $1:n$, the real lengths are $n$ times those on the plan, so $k = n$. The real surface areas are $n^2$ times those on the plan.

Calculating with the ratio of volumes

Scale models, maps, and the cost of enlarging

These ratios show up in everyday things: how much glass a fish tank needs, how much it costs to fill a larger tank, or how much real land a farm drawn on a plan covers.

Two similar fish tanks 40 cm and 80 cm long; the glass for the small one costs 300 pesos. 40 cm · 300 pesos 80 cm · ? pesos

Back to the beginning: Yaritza doubles the width and height ($k = 2$), so the paper for the sign costs $k^2 = 4$ times as much, not double.
