Table of a Function
A ticket to a merengue concert in Santiago costs $\text{RD}\$900$. If you go with 1, 2, or 10 friends, how much do you pay in total? The quickest way is to organize it in a table: one row with the number of tickets and another with the price. The table is another way of seeing the same relation that a formula or a graph gives.
The table of values
Each column is a pair $(x, y)$. The independent variable always comes first.
For a relation to be a function, each value of $x$ must correspond to a single value of $y$. If in a table the same $x$ appears with two different $y$ values, it is not a function.

For a relation to be a function, each value of the independent variable ($x$) must correspond to a single value of the dependent variable ($y$).
State which of the following tables does NOT represent a function and explain why:
Table A:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| $y$ | 5 | 5 | 7 | 7 |

At a music festival, the price of a ticket is $15$ pesos. If we want to buy several tickets for a group of friends, the relationship between the number of tickets and the total cost can be organised in a table.
Complete the missing values in the following table of values:
| Number of tickets ($x$) | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total cost in pesos ($y$) | $15$ | ? | ? | $60$ | ? |
From the formula to the table
If you know the formula, filling in the table means substituting $x$ with each requested value and calculating $y$, following the order of operations.
Many situations come from a fixed fee plus a payment per unit. For example, a skateboard rental with $\text{RD}\$120$ to unlock it and $\text{RD}\$30$ per minute: $y = 30x + 120$. With $x = 10$ minutes: $y = 30 \times 10 + 120 = 420$.

A video game streaming platform offers a premium plan that costs $\text{RD\$}\ 5$ per month as a fixed fee, plus $\text{RD\$}\ 0.50$ for each hour of high-quality gaming.
The function relating the monthly cost $y$ to the number of hours played $x$ is $y = 0.5x + 5$.

Tables with more data: costs and comparisons
A table lets you compare. If one function is $y = 30x + 300$ and another is $y = 150x$, you can calculate both for the same values of $x$ and see which is lower in each case.
There are also tables with negative numbers or decimals, like the temperature of a freezer that drops $8$ °C every $5$ minutes: $18, 10, 2, -6, -14$. If the trend continues, at $25$ minutes it will be $-14 - 8 = -22$ °C.

From the table to the formula: the rate of change
If the table is not directly proportional, it may be affine: $y = mx + n$. To find $m$, look at how much $y$ goes up when $x$ goes up by one unit. To find $n$, look for the value of $y$ when $x = 0$.
If the changes in $y$ are not always proportional to the changes in $x$, the relation is not a single line: for example, a plan with $20$ GB included and then an extra cost per GB changes its rate.
