The Set of Integers

Before you start, make sure you know: The Set of Integers (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

Yaritza has $\text{RD}\$120$ on her bus card and spends $\text{RD}\$300$ on fares during the month. What number represents her balance? And how many integers satisfy "its absolute value is less than or equal to 4"? What if they also have to be greater than $-2$? You already know integers: now you are going to treat them as a set, with conditions that get combined.

Opposite, absolute value, and order

On the number line, the absolute value of an integer is its distance from $0$, and the opposite is the number that is the same distance from $0$ but on the other side.

Number line with the numbers negative 5 and 5, opposites of each other, five units from zero. −505 |−5| = 5|5| = 5
  • Opposite of $-14$: $+14$. Opposite of $+9$: $-9$. The opposite of $0$ is $0$.

  • $|-14| = 14$ and $|+21| = 21$. Absolute value is never negative.

  • Order: the number farther to the right on the line is the greater one. Every negative is less than $0$ and than any positive. Between two negatives, the one closer to $0$ is greater: $-2 > -8$.

The number line and real-world problems

Integers are used to describe situations with two directions: gaining/losing, going up/going down, above/below zero, credit/debt.

Situation Integer
You earn $450$ points $+450$
You lose $125$ points $-125$
A submarine $150$ m below sea level $-150$
$4$ degrees below zero $-4\,^\circ\text{C}$
The year $500$ BC $-500$

To represent integers, draw a line, mark the $0$, and place the positives to the right and the negatives to the left with the same spacing between consecutive numbers.

BC and AD years

The timeline is a number line: years before Christ (BC) are written as negative integers and years after Christ (AD) as positive ones. So the year $500$ BC is $-500$ and the year $1844$ AD (Dominican Independence) is $+1844$.

There is one peculiarity: there is no year zero. After the year $1$ BC comes the year $1$ AD directly. In other words, on the calendar you go from $-1$ to $+1$.

Timeline: from the year negative 2 you go to negative 1 and then directly to 1, with no year zero. −2−112there is no year 0

For this reason, to count the years between a BC date and an AD date, subtracting the integers gives you one year too many, and you have to take it off.

If both dates are on the same side (both BC or both AD), normal subtraction works with no correction: from $-500$ to $-300$, $200$ years passed.

Distance between two integers

The distance between two integers on the line is the number of units that separate them. You get it by subtracting the lesser from the greater, or with absolute value: $d(a, b) = |a - b|$.
