The concept of a function

Before you start, make sure you know: Tables and graphs (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

The battery on your cell phone depends on the minutes you have been playing. The money you pay for a motoconcho ride depends on the distance. The temperature in Santiago depends on the time of day. When one quantity depends on another in such a way that each value has exactly one result, we have a function. How can you tell whether a relationship meets that condition? That is what we are going to learn.

What a function is

Diagram of a function as a machine: the value x = 2 goes in, the rule y = 4x is applied, and a single value y = 8 comes out. f"machine" x = 2 y = 8 y = 4x: one number goes in, ONE comes out

It can also be seen with an arrow diagram (Venn diagram): the values of $x$ on the left, those of $y$ on the right. It is a function if only one arrow leaves each element on the left. More than one arrow may arrive at the same element on the right.

One of the golden rules for deciding whether a graph represents a function is to check that for each value of the independent variable $x$ there is exactly one value of the dependent variable $y$. State which of the following graphs is NOT a function and briefly justify your answer.

Indicate which of the following relations are not functions and explain the reason based on the definition of a function:

  1. To each person in your class, we assign their date of birth.

  2. To each natural number, we assign its factors.

  3. To each real number, we assign its positive square root.

  4. To each mother, we assign the names of her children.

  5. To each product in a store, we assign its price in pesos.

Independent and dependent variable

First of all, you have to identify what depends on what. A motoconcho charges $\text{RD}\$50$ to start and $\text{RD}\$20$ for each kilometer:

  • The kilometers traveled are decided by the customer: independent variable ($x$).

  • The total cost is calculated from the kilometers: dependent variable ($y$).

$$y = 20x + 50$$ Diagram showing that the cost of the ride (dependent variable) depends on the kilometers traveled (independent variable). kilometers traveled independent (x) depends on total cost dependent (y)

Table and algebraic expression

A function can be given with a table of values or with an algebraic expression (formula). To fill in the table, you substitute each $x$ into the formula. Sometimes $f(x)$ is written instead of $y$.

And to write the formula for a situation: if a cell phone's battery drops $8\%$ each hour and starts at $100\%$, after $x$ hours it has $y = 100 - 8x$ left. Start from the initial value and add or subtract what changes for each unit of $x$.

Points in the plane and the vertical line test

Each pair $(x, y)$ of a function is a point in the Cartesian plane: $x$ is read on the horizontal axis and $y$ on the vertical axis. It is always written $(x, y)$, in that order. Joining the points gives the graph of the function.

Cartesian plane with two marked points: A at (2, 3) and B at (4, 1). A(2, 3) B(4, 1) xy

Not every curve drawn in the plane is a function. To check: draw imaginary vertical lines. If any of them crosses the graph at more than one point, it is not a function (that $x$ would have two different $y$ values).

Vertical line test: on the curve on the left a vertical line always crosses at only one point, so it is a function; on the circle on the right it crosses at two points, so it is not a function. 1 crossing: it is a function 2 crossings: it is not a function

Reading a graph: domain, range, and continuity

When you read the graph of a function, always ask yourself: what is on each axis, in what units, and for which values does it make sense?

In a $20$ L tank that fills at $4$ L/min, the domain is $[0, 5]$ minutes: after $5$ min the tank is full and the faucet is shut off. The range is $[0, 20]$ liters.

Continuous or discrete

A function is continuous if its graph can be drawn without lifting your pencil: $x$ can take any value in the interval (time, weight, distance). It is discrete if $x$ takes only separate values, usually countable ones (number of people, bags, days); then the graph is isolated points and they are not joined. A function can also be discontinuous: it has jumps, like a rate that goes up in steps.

Increasing and decreasing

A graph has increasing stretches (it goes up as you move right), decreasing stretches (it goes down), and constant stretches (flat). A point higher than its neighbors is a maximum; one lower than its neighbors is a minimum. If it is the highest (or lowest) point of the whole graph, it is absolute; if it is only so in its neighborhood, it is relative.
