Statistical Parameters

Before you start, make sure you know: Tables (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Measures of center and spread (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

Two cell phone models have the same average battery life: 15 hours. Are they equally reliable? A single number doesn't tell the whole story. You need to know where the "center" of the data is and also whether the data are close together or widely spread out. That is what statistical parameters measure.

Types of variables

Before calculating, you need to know what type of data you have. Which parameters you can calculate depends on it.

To carry out a study on the consumption habits of teenagers on a social network, the profiles of $50$ students from a high school were analyzed. Classify the following statistical variables obtained in the study as qualitative or quantitative (indicating whether they are discrete or continuous):

  • a) Brand of cell phone used.

  • b) Number of "likes" received on the latest post.

  • c) Total time (in minutes) spent using the app during the day.

  • d) Main topic of the videos watched (sports, comedy, music, etc.).

Mean, median, and mode

The mean is the fair share: if everyone had the same amount, each would have $\bar{x}$. The median leaves half of the data on each side. Change the data and see where the mean and the median land:

Measures of position: quartiles, deciles, and quintiles

The median divides the data into two halves. Other measures divide them into more equal parts.

For quartiles: $Q_2$ is the median, $Q_1$ is the median of the lower half, and $Q_3$ is the median of the upper half (if $N$ is odd, the median is not included in either half). For a decile $D_k$, calculate the position $\dfrac{k \cdot N}{10}$. If it is not a whole number, round up to the next position.

The box plot summarizes five values: minimum, $Q_1$, $Me$, $Q_3$, and maximum. Each section contains approximately 25% of the data.

Box plot of the scores 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10: minimum 3, first quartile 5, median 6, third quartile 8, and maximum 10. 3 5 6 8 10 min Q₁ Me Q₃ max

A wide box means the data are more spread out in the middle. If a team's maximum in a box plot is less than some limit, you know it never exceeds it.
