Least Common Multiple
At a stop in Santo Domingo, a guagua (bus) on route A comes by every $12$ minutes, another on route B every $15$, and another on route C every $20$. All three have just met at the stop. When will they meet there again? That is the question the least common multiple answers.
What the LCM Is
Find the lowest common multiple of the following pairs of numbers mentally: a) $m.c.m.(2, 5)$ b) $m.c.m.(3, 9)$ c) $m.c.m.(4, 10)$ d) $m.c.m.(7, 11)$

In a platform video game, your character gets a protective shield every $4$ levels and a speed boost every $6$ levels. If you have just started the game at level $0$, at which level will both rewards coincide for the first time? Calculate the result by finding the first multiples of each number.
The number line shows the first jump of each reward. Continue the jumps yourself until you find the first level where they coincide.

A messaging application sends a "news digest" notification every $10$ minutes, while another social media application does so every $15$ minutes. If both sent a notification at $10:00$ in the morning, how many minutes will pass until they coincide again for the first time? Write out the sets of multiples of $10$ and $15$ to find the lowest common multiple.
Calculating the LCM by Prime Factorization
Listing multiples is slow with big numbers. The fast method: break each number into prime factors and take all the prime factors, common and not common, raised to the highest exponent. You can factor with the factor tree or with the vertical bar, as in Year 1.
Factor tree
You split each number into two factors and keep going until all the "leaves" are prime.
Vertical bar
You divide by primes (2, 3, 5, …) until you reach 1 and read off the primes used.
| 12 | 2 |
|---|---|
| 6 | 2 |
| 3 | 3 |
| 1 |
So, $12 = 2^2 \times 3$. In the same way, $18 \to 9 \to 3 \to 1$ with the primes $2, 3, 3$, that is, $18 = 2 \times 3^2$.
You can also factor all the numbers at once in a single bar: you divide by a prime all the numbers that are multiples of it (the others are brought down unchanged) and, when you reach all $1$s, the LCM is the product of the primes used.
| 12, 18 | 2 |
|---|---|
| 6, 9 | 2 |
| 3, 9 | 3 |
| 1, 3 | 3 |
| 1, 1 |
The product of the primes is $2 \times 2 \times 3 \times 3 = 36$.

Calculate the lowest common multiple of the numbers $12$ and $18$ in your exercise book using prime factorisation. To do this, follow these steps:
-
Find the prime factorisation of both numbers.
-
Identify the common and non-common factors raised to the highest power.
-
Multiply them to obtain the $m.c.m.(12, 18)$.
Find the lowest common multiple of the following groups of numbers using prime factorisation: a) $m.c.m.(45, 75)$ b) $m.c.m.(12, 18, 24)$ c) $m.c.m.(80, 120, 200)$

The LCM with Three or More Numbers
The method is the same; you just compare more factorizations at once.

- a) Express the time between changes for each code as a decimal.
- b) Calculate, expressing the result using its prime factorisation, how often all three code changes coincide simultaneously.
- c) How many minutes will have passed between each coincidence?
The Relationship Between the LCM and the GCF
For two numbers $a$ and $b$, a very useful relationship holds:
The product of two natural numbers is $6\,750$ and their highest common factor ($M.C.D.$) is $15$. Using the relationship between the product of two numbers, their…
The product of two natural numbers is $6\,750$ and their highest common factor ($M.C.D.$) is $15$. Using the relationship between the product of two numbers, their $M.C.D.$ and their lowest common multiple ($m.c.m.$), first calculate the value of the $m.c.m.$ of these numbers. Next, find out what those two numbers are, knowing that their difference is exactly $15$.
Applications of the LCM
The LCM shows up when something repeats with a period and you ask when it coincides. Look at the type of data: if things must coincide or start over together, use the LCM; if things must be split into equal parts, use the GCF.

Longer Problems with the LCM
Some problems hide the LCM behind another question. Three typical situations:
-
Squares with rectangles: the side of the smallest square that can be covered with $a \times b$ tiles is the $LCM(a, b)$. You calculate it for the width and for the length separately.
-
Gears: they coincide again when a number of teeth equal to the LCM of their teeth has passed. The turns of each one are that LCM divided by its number of teeth.
-
Fixed remainder: if dividing by several numbers always leaves a remainder $r$, the number is a multiple of the LCM plus $r$.

A design company wants to manufacture square billboard panels. To do this, they have three types of rectangular tiles of different colors, whose dimensions are $12 \times 18$ cm, $15 \times 20$ cm and $18 \times 24$ cm. They want to build the smallest possible square panel that can be covered by any of the three types of tiles independently (without mixing them on the same panel). What should the side length of this panel be? How many tiles of each type would be needed to cover it?
