Volume of Geometric Solids

Before you start, make sure you know: Circle and circumference (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Perimeters and areas of polygons (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

How much water fits in a water tank at a home in Santiago? How much ice cream goes into a cone in the Zona Colonial? These are questions about volume: the space a solid takes up.

Prisms and cylinders

A prism or a cylinder is like a "stack" of identical bases, one on top of another. Its volume is the area of the base times the height:

$$V = A_{base} \times h \qquad \text{Rectangular prism: } V = a \times b \times c \qquad \text{Cylinder: } V = \pi r^2 h$$ Stack of coins illustrating the volume of the cylinder as the area of the base multiplied by the height stack of identical "coins": V = (area of the base) · height

To convert from units of volume to liters: $1\text{ dm}^3 = 1$ liter, $1{,}000\text{ cm}^3 = 1$ liter, and $1\text{ m}^3 = 1{,}000$ liters.

If the base is not a rectangle, first calculate its area and then multiply by the height of the prism. For example, for a triangular prism: $V = \dfrac{b \times h_{tri}}{2} \times \text{length}$.

Pyramids and cones: one third

If you fill a pyramid with water and pour it into a prism with the same base and the same height, you need exactly three pyramids to fill it. The same thing happens with the cone and the cylinder.

$$V_{pyramid} = \frac{A_{base} \times h}{3} \qquad\qquad V_{cone} = \frac{\pi r^2 h}{3}$$ Animation: the pyramid is poured into the prism with the same base and height; the blue fill rises one third of the height each time, three pourings in total, until it is completely full, and then it restarts. Three dots count the pourings. prism: filled to 1/3 pyramid × 3 = prism

When you are given the edge or the slant height

Sometimes the problem doesn't give the height, but the slant height of the cone or the lateral edge of the pyramid. The height comes from the Pythagorean theorem: in the cone, $g^2 = r^2 + h^2$; in a regular pyramid, the lateral edge is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose legs are the height and the distance from the center of the base to a vertex.

Pyramid with a hexagonal base

A regular hexagon with side $l$ can be divided into six equilateral triangles with side $l$. Each one has height $\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\,l$, so its area is $\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{4}\,l^2$. The whole hexagon has:

$$A_{hexagon} = 6 \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4}\,l^2 = \frac{3\sqrt{3}}{2}\,l^2 \approx 2.598\,l^2$$

Also, the distance from the center to each vertex is equal to the side $l$. This lets you find the height of the pyramid with Pythagoras.
