Linear function or direct proportionality

Before you start, make sure you know: Direct proportionality (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

At the corner store, each pan de agua roll costs $\text{RD}\$5$. A Metro bus always moves at the same speed. If you buy twice as many rolls, you pay twice as much. If the bus travels twice as long, it covers twice the distance. When one variable doubles and the other one also doubles, we are looking at a linear function (direct proportionality), and its graph is always a straight line through the origin. How do we write it and use it?

The direct proportionality function

Here $x$ is the independent variable (the one you choose) and $y$ is the dependent variable (the one that results). Move the slider and watch how the line changes.

  • $m > 0$: the line is increasing (it goes up from left to right).

  • $m < 0$: the line is decreasing (it goes down from left to right).

  • The larger $|m|$ is, the steeper the line.

Three friends compare their cell phone data plans to see how many "gigs" they consume when watching high-definition videos. It is known that consumption is proportional to the viewing time.

  • Plan A: $y = 0.8x$

  • Plan B: $y = 1.2x$

  • Plan C: $y = 0.5x$

Where $x$ is the time in hours and $y$ is the gigs consumed.

  1. a) Which of the three plans consumes data fastest? Justify your answer using the concept of slope.
  2. b) If a user has a daily limit of $6$ GB, how many hours of video could they watch with Plan B before running out of data?

Constant of proportionality and tables

In a linear function, the quotient $\dfrac{y}{x}$ is the same for every point (with $x \neq 0$). That quotient is $m$. So, to tell whether a table shows direct proportionality, divide each $y$ by its $x$: if you always get the same result, it does.

$x$ 1 2 3
$y$ 5 10 15

Here $\frac{5}{1} = \frac{10}{2} = \frac{15}{3} = 5$, so $y = 5x$.

The slope: how to calculate it and what it means

The constant $m$ is also called the slope: it is how much $y$ increases each time $x$ increases by $1$ unit.

$$m = \frac{y}{x} = \frac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}$$ Graph of the line y = 2x: moving 1 unit horizontally goes up 2 vertically, so the slope is m = 2. O(0, 0) P(1, 2) run 1 rise 2 m = 2

Graphing $y = mx$

Two points are enough: the origin $O(0, 0)$ always works, and for the other one you substitute a simple value of $x$ (for example, $x = 1$).

You can also start from a table. For $m = 4$:

$x$ -2 -1 0 1 2
$y$ -8 -4 0 4 8

If you are given a point, such as $A(-3, 12)$, the slope is $m = \frac{12}{-3} = -4$ and the line is $y = -4x$.
