The Pythagorean Theorem

Before you start, make sure you know: Triangles (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Square root (Secondary Year 1 (first cycle))

Wilkin leans a ladder against the wall of his house in Santiago. The ladder, the wall, and the ground form a right triangle. More than 2,000 years ago, Pythagoras discovered a fixed relationship among the three sides of any right triangle: if you know two sides, you can always calculate the third. How high does the ladder reach if you know its length and its distance from the wall?

The Pythagorean theorem

In a right triangle, the two sides that form the right angle are called the legs ($a$ and $b$); the side opposite the right angle, the longest one, is the hypotenuse ($c$).

Look at the drawing: the square built on the hypotenuse has exactly the same area as the two squares on the legs put together. That is why the formula works.

It also works the other way around: if the sides of a triangle satisfy $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ (with $c$ the longest), the triangle is a right triangle.

Pythagoras in plane figures

Pythagoras together with similarity

Many problems combine two ideas: Pythagoras to find a side and the similarity ratio $k$ to move to a similar figure.

  • Lengths (sides, diagonals, perimeters) are multiplied by $k$.

  • Areas are multiplied by $k^2$.

  • If a drawing has similar triangles, their sides are proportional.
