Arithmetic progressions
Regina is training for the Mexico City marathon: on the first day she runs 12 km, and each day she increases the distance by the same amount. How far will she have run in total by the day she reaches 42 km? When you always add a fixed amount, you have an arithmetic progression. In this section you will use it to set up equations and systems and to solve problems.
General term and common difference
The formula makes sense because to get from $a_1$ to $a_n$ you take $n-1$ steps, each of size $d$.

Finding the common difference from two terms
If you know two non-consecutive terms, you can set up a system with $a_1$ and $d$ as unknowns, or count the "steps" between them and solve for $d$ directly.
With a system it would be: $a_1+3d=15$ and $a_1+9d=39$. You subtract the equations (elimination method) and get $6d=24$.

From the sum to the general term
Sometimes you are given the sum $S_n$ as an expression in $n$ and asked for the term $a_n$. The idea: $S_n$ includes all the terms up to the $n$th, and $S_{n-1}$ all except the last. When you subtract, only the last one remains.

Problems with arithmetic progressions
Seats in a theater, stacked pipes, angles of a polygon… Always ask yourself: is the same amount added each time? Am I asked for a term or a sum? How many terms are there really?

The interior angles of a convex hexagon are in arithmetic progression. Knowing that the largest angle measures $140^\circ$, calculate the measures of the other five interior angles of the hexagon. (Remember that the sum of the interior angles of an $n$-sided polygon is $180^\circ \times (n-2)$).
Simple interest and increasing payments
In simple interest, interest is always calculated on the initial principal $C$, without being added to it. Each period the same amount is added, so the balance grows as an arithmetic progression.
The same thing happens with payments in which each installment rises by a fixed amount: the sum of all the installments is $S_n$, and the first and last installments are $a_1$ and $a_n$.
