Logarithmic Function
The September 2017 earthquake in Mexico had a magnitude of $7.1$. Does it release twice as much energy as one of magnitude $5.1$? No: it releases a thousand times more.
The Richter scale, pH, and decibels squeeze enormous numbers into a manageable scale thanks to a single tool: the logarithm.
You already know how to calculate $\log_a x$; now we study it as a function, with its domain, its graph, and the equations it lets us solve.

Logarithmic equations and systems
Systems with logarithms
When one equation is linear and the other is logarithmic, the methods are combined: substitution (solving for one unknown in the linear equation) and reduction to a single logarithm in the other.
If the resulting quadratic doesn't factor, use the quadratic formula and discard any roots that violate the domain.
