Graphing Functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Studying a function (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Polynomial division (Secondary Year 3)

Ximena graphs a function in GeoGebra and sees a curve that rises, bends, and hugs a line without touching it. On the admissions exam there will be no computer, and trying five or six points can make you miss a maximum or an asymptote. In this section you will learn a fixed procedure, with the same steps in the same order, to sketch a reliable graph using limits and derivatives.

Domain, symmetry, and intercepts

The first steps only require algebra and give the "skeleton" of the graph.

Graph of an even function, symmetric about the vertical Y-axis even: symmetric about the Y-axis

It is also useful to know where the graph is above or below the $X$-axis. The zeros of $f$ and the values excluded from the domain split the line into intervals, and on each one the sign of $f$ does not change. For example, a parabola with roots $1$ and $4$ and a positive leading coefficient is above the axis outside $[1,4]$ and below it inside. Its expression is $f(x)=a(x-1)(x-4)$ with $a>0$.

Asymptotes: vertical, horizontal, and oblique

Graph of a rational function with a vertical asymptote and a horizontal asymptote vertical x = a horizontal y = L

For the horizontal one, compare degrees: if the degree of the numerator is smaller, $y=0$. If they are equal, $y=$ the quotient of the leading coefficients. For example, $f(x)=\dfrac{2x+1}{x-4}$ approaches $\dfrac21=2$ as $x\to\pm\infty$.

Concavity and inflection points

The derivative says whether the curve rises or falls, but not how it bends. The second derivative takes care of that.

Some books call the concave up shape ($\cup$) convex and the concave down shape ($\cap$) concave. Some exercises use that wording. Always look at the drawing $\cup$ or $\cap$.

Calculating concavity

For a polynomial, the calculation is direct: set $f''(x)=0$ and check the sign on each side.

If the expression has a parameter, the sign of $f''$ depends on it. In $f(x)=(a^2-9)x^2+5x-2$, $f''=2(a^2-9)$: it is $\cup$ if $a^2>9$, $\cap$ if $a^2<9$, and if $a=\pm3$ the function is linear, $f(x)=5x-2$.

To compare with a secant line: if a function is $\cup$, the segment joining two points of the graph lies above the curve. For example, for $f(x)=x^2$ the secant through $x=-1$ and $x=3$ passes through $(-1,1)$ and $(3,9)$, with slope $2$: $y=2x+3$. At $x=1$ it equals $5>f(1)=1$.

A fundamental geometric property of convex functions ($\cup$) is that the line segment joining any two points on its graph always lies above the curve.

Verify this property analytically for the function $f(x) = x^2$. To do so, find the equation of the secant line passing through the points on the graph with x-coordinates $x = -1$ and $x = 3$. Then, calculate the value of the line at $x = 1$ and check that it is strictly greater than $f(1)$.

Concavity in real situations

Concavity tells how the rate changes. If $f$ is a quantity that is growing, $\cup$ means it grows faster and faster and $\cap$ means it grows more and more slowly. The inflection point is where the rate is at its maximum or minimum.

  • Distance versus time: $\cup$ is speeding up, $\cap$ is slowing down, a straight stretch is constant speed.

  • Cumulative cases in an epidemic: before the inflection, new cases per day increase; after it, they decrease. The inflection marks the daily peak, that is, the moment when the curve of new cases reaches its maximum.

  • Costs of a factory: $C(x)=x^3-60x^2+1500x$ has $C''(x)=6x-120$, which equals zero at $x=20$. For $x<20$ the cost grows more and more slowly ($\cap$) and for $x>20$ faster and faster ($\cup$).

Piecewise functions, joins, and corner points

In a piecewise function, each piece is studied with its own formula. At the point where the pieces meet, you have to check two different things.

  • Continuity: the one-sided limits at $x=a$ and the value $f(a)$ must agree.

  • Smooth join (no "corner"): besides being continuous, the one-sided derivatives must be equal, that is, the two slopes coincide at $x=a$.

When an exercise asks for a smooth join with parameters, set up two equations: one for continuity (equal values) and one for differentiability (equal slopes). If it also asks for an inflection, use $f''$ to check that the concavity changes at that point.

The absolute value also produces piecewise functions. For $f(x)=|x^2-4|$ we reason by sign: $x^2-4\ge0$ when $|x|\ge2$, and then $f(x)=x^2-4$. On $(-2,2)$ the inside is negative and $f(x)=4-x^2$. Its graph is the parabola $y=x^2-4$ with the negative part reflected upward.

At $x=2$ the function is continuous, but the slopes do not coincide. From the left, $f'(x)=-2x$ equals $-4$. From the right, $f'(x)=2x$ equals $4$. There is a corner point (a "peak"): $f'(2)$ does not exist, even though the graph is continuous. The same happens at $x=-2$.

An engineer is designing the profile of a roller coaster. The first descending section follows the equation $y = -x^2 + 4$ for $x \le 1$. To smooth the transition to the climb, they decide to join, at $x = 1$, a second section shaped like the parabola $y = a(x - 2)^2 + b$ for $x > 1$.

For the join to be smooth, the whole function must be continuous and differentiable at $x = 1$ (no jumps or corners). Moreover, the curvature must change at that point: the first section is concave and the second must be convex, so that $x = 1$ is an inflection point.

  1. a) Find the values of $a$ and $b$ by imposing continuity and differentiability at $x = 1$.
  1. b) Check that with those values the change of curvature at $x = 1$ holds, by studying the sign of the second derivative of each section.
