Two-Variable Statistics Problems

Before you start, make sure you know: Bivariate distributions (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

You already know each piece separately: covariance, $r$, and the two regression lines. But on admission exams (EXANI-II, UNAM, IPN) they almost never give you exactly what you need: they give you different pieces (two lines, or $r$ and a standard deviation, or just summations), and you have to combine the formulas in the right order. This section is that training.

Interpreting and predicting

Before calculating, look at the scatter plot: if it rises, $S_{xy}>0$; if it falls, $S_{xy}<0$; the more tightly it hugs a line, the closer $r$ is to $\pm1$.

The following scatter diagram shows the growth of a bacterial colony ($Y$, in thousands) as a function of time ($X$, in hours). The scatter plot suggests an exponential growth of the type $Y = A \times e^{BX}$.

To linearise the model, it has been proposed to make the change of variable $Z = \ln(Y)$. If, by performing a linear regression fit of $Z$ on $X$, we obtain the line $z = 0.4x + 1.2$, determine the numerical values of the constants $A$ and $B$ of the original exponential model.

From a sample to a decision

At a high school in Guadalajara, they want to know whether it's worth proposing walking routes to campus. They ask 5 students for their distance (km) and their travel time (min). With five made-up data points, we are only practicing the method; nothing real is being decided.

Distance (km) 1 2 3 4 5
Time (min) 12 13 15 14 16
Scatter plot of distance versus travel time with the regression line. 1116 15 Time (min)Distance (km)

With the line, 3 km corresponds to 14 min. This is a trend in this sample: it does not prove that each extra kilometer causes 0.9 more minutes (traffic and the route matter), nor can it be used to guarantee another student's travel time. Five students do not represent the whole campus: you would need a larger, randomly chosen sample, with no names or addresses.

Back to the beginning: in an exam problem, identify what you are given (lines, $r$, summations, a table, a change of variable), choose the formula that connects to what is being asked, and work through the map step by step.
