Polar and Trigonometric Form of a Complex Number

Before you start, make sure you know: Oriented angles and the unit circle (Secondary Year 3)
Before you start, make sure you know: Reduction to the first quadrant and the fundamental identity (Secondary Year 3)

A 2D video game moves a character by rotating it around a point. How can you rotate a point $60^\circ$ with a single multiplication? Until now you located $z$ with two Cartesian coordinates $(a, b)$. But a point can also be described by its distance from the origin and its angle, and with that information the product, quotient, powers, and roots become very simple. At the end of the page we answer the rotation question.

Modulus and argument

Affix of z = a + bi in the complex plane with its modulus r and its argument α. α z = a + bi r = |z| a b

Since $a=r\cos\alpha$ and $b=r\sin\alpha$, the modulus comes from the Pythagorean theorem and the angle satisfies $\tan\alpha = \dfrac{b}{a}$.

From polar to binomial: trigonometric form

If you already have $r$ and $\alpha$, recovering $a$ and $b$ is right-triangle trigonometry: the adjacent leg is $a = r\cos\alpha$ and the opposite leg is $b = r\sin\alpha$.

Conjugate and opposite in polar form

In binomial form, conjugating changes the sign of $b$ and the opposite changes both signs. In polar form you see it in the angle: conjugating reflects across the real axis and the opposite rotates a half turn.

Product, quotient, and powers

This is where polar form shines. When you multiply $r(\cos\alpha+i\sin\alpha)$ by $s(\cos\beta+i\sin\beta)$ and use the sine and cosine sum formulas, the moduli are multiplied and the angles are added.

Multiplying by $w=1_{60^\circ}$ does not change the distance from the origin and adds $60^\circ$ to the angle: it is a rotation of $60^\circ$. That answers the video game question.
