The Remainder Theorem
In a computer science class you are asked for the remainder of dividing $P(x)=x^{2024}-3x^{2023}+2x^5-7x+4$ by $x-3$. Nobody does that whole division: with a single substitution, $P(3)$, the problem is solved in seconds. The remainder theorem is that substitution. At the end of the page we come back to this problem.
The remainder theorem
A numerical value can also be interpreted this way: if $x(t)=-2t^3+8t^2-5t+3$ is the position of an object, $x(3)$ is the position at $t=3$ and, at the same time, the remainder of dividing $x(t)$ by $t-3$.

Several conditions at once: systems of equations
With two parameters you need two conditions; each gives an equation, and together they form a system of linear equations, which you solve with the method you prefer (elimination, substitution, or equating).
Notice that a condition such as "the constant term is $-12$" or "it is divisible by $x$" also provides an equation: $P(0)=-12$ or $P(0)=0$. And if it is divisible by $x^2-4=(x-2)(x+2)$, then it is divisible by $x-2$ and by $x+2$: $P(2)=0$ and $P(-2)=0$.
