Before you start, make sure you know: Factoring and synthetic division (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

Ximena and Diego are going to paint a wall in Puebla. Working together they finish in 4 hours, and Ximena, working alone, would take 6 hours less than Diego. How long does each one take? That equation has the unknown in the denominator and doesn't look like $ax^2+bx+c=0$. Here you will learn to recognize which trick turns it into something familiar: a change of variable, a property of exponents or logarithms, squaring both sides, or synthetic division.

Biquadratic equations

Flowchart for solving the biquadratic equation x⁴ − 10x² + 9 = 0 using the substitution t = x². x⁴ − 10x² + 9 = 0 t = x² t² − 10t + 9 = 0 solve t = 1, t = 9 x = ±√t x = ±1, x = ±3

Why does it work? Because $x^4=(x^2)^2$. If you call $x^2$ by the name $t$, the equation becomes quadratic.

The graph crosses the $x$-axis at four points, which are the four solutions.

Rational equations

Work-together problems use the idea that, if someone takes $x$ hours, in one hour they do $\frac1x$ of the job.

That closes the opening problem: Diego takes 12 hours and Ximena 6.
