Radicals
To find the period of a pendulum, the speed of a wave, or the diagonal of a part in a workshop, sooner or later a root shows up. On the UNAM or IPN admission exam, and on the EXANI-II, you're expected to handle them exactly, without switching to decimals. How do you simplify an expression like $\dfrac{6}{\sqrt{3}}$ or $\dfrac{4}{\sqrt{5}-1}$ so that it ends up "clean"? By the end of this page you'll know how.

The period $T$ of a simple pendulum is given by the physics formula $T = 2\pi\sqrt{\frac{L}{g}}$, where $L$ is the length of the string and $g$ is acceleration due to gravity. If an engineer needs the new period to be exactly $\sqrt{2} + 1$ times the original period, by what exact factor must they multiply the original length $L$? Express your reasoning algebraically by expanding the square of the binomial.

In a regular pentagon of side length $L = 2$ cm, the length of any diagonal $D$ is related to the side length by the golden ratio $\Phi = \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, satisfying $D = L \times \Phi$. If a subatomic particle travels at a speed of $v = \frac{\sqrt{5}}{3}c$, calculate the exact value of $\gamma$. Subsequently, determine the exact speed $v$ (in terms of $c$) at which it must travel for the factor to be $\gamma = \sqrt{2} + 1$, rationalising the result if necessary.
