Movements in the Plane

A delivery drone flying from Colonia Roma to Coyoacán, the reflection of a building in a plaza's reflecting pool, an antenna moved a few meters to avoid interference: all of these are movements of the plane. Each one is described by a precise vector operation, and all of them preserve distances, because the figure that moves is not deformed. At the end you will see how they are used to find where a billiard ball should bounce.

Translation

If you know the starting point $A$ and the ending point $B$, the vector that describes the displacement is $\vec v = \overrightarrow{AB} = B - A$.

Direct cases

Axis of reflection $(x, y)$ goes to
$x$-axis ($y=0$) $(x, -y)$
$y$-axis ($x=0$) $(-x, y)$
line $y=x$ $(y, x)$
line $x=a$ $(2a-x,\ y)$
line $y=b$ $(x,\ 2b-y)$

Any line

If the line is $Ax+By+C=0$, its vector $(A, B)$ is perpendicular to it. With that, the process takes three steps.

Translating circles, parabolas, and ellipses

Translation of a circle: the radius stays the same and only the position of the center changes. original center translated center

To translate a curve, you translate its "key point" (the center of a circle or ellipse, the vertex of a parabola) and the measurements stay the same. To find that point you complete the square.

Prove analytically that the composition of two reflections across parallel lines is equivalent to a translation. To do this, consider the lines $r \equiv x - 2y = 0$ and $s \equiv x - 2y + 10 = 0$. Take a generic point $P(x_0, y_0)$, find its reflection $P'$ across $r$, and then the reflection $P''$ of $P'$ across $s$. Applications: perpendicular bisector and shortest paths

Axis of symmetry between two points

If $B$ is the reflection of $A$ across a line $s$, then $s$ is the perpendicular bisector of $AB$: it passes through the midpoint and is perpendicular to $AB$. Its points are equidistant from $A$ and $B$.

Shortest path with a bounce

If $A$ and $B$ are on the same side of a line $s$ and you want to go from $A$ to a point $P\in s$ and then to $B$, the length $AP+PB$ is smallest when $P$ is on the line joining $A$ with the reflection $B'$ of $B$. That way $PB=PB'$ and the shortest path from $A$ to $B'$ is the straight line. It is the same idea as reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
