Limit of a Function as x → ∞

Ximena takes a pill for a headache. Hours go by: two, ten, twenty-four... How much medicine is left in her blood "in the long run"? That question is a limit when the variable goes very far out, toward $+\infty$ or $-\infty$. By the end of this page you'll know how to answer it, and you'll see that there are very clear patterns depending on the type of function.

Horizontal asymptotes

A function can have a different asymptote on each side, or on only one side. That's why the two limits are calculated separately. Watch how this function settles down: both to the right and to the left it approaches $y=4$.

Graph of (8x − 5)/(2x + 3): it approaches the line y = 4 both to the right and to the left, with a vertical asymptote at x = −1.5. y = 4x = −1.5 lim at +∞ = 4, lim at −∞ = 4

Back to the beginning: if the concentration of Ximena's pill is $C(t)=\dfrac{15t}{t^2+4}$ mg/L, the numerator has degree 1 and the denominator has degree 2. The limit is $0$: in the long run the medicine is completely eliminated.

The $\infty-\infty$ indeterminate form with fractions and logarithms

If you subtract two expressions that both tend to $\infty$, you can't conclude anything directly: you have to transform the expression first.

Parameters and oblique asymptotes

Parameters. If a limit must equal a given number, calculate the limit with the parameter as a letter and set the result equal to that number. For example, if the limit of a quotient with equal degrees is $\dfrac{k}{5}$, you solve $\dfrac{k}{5}=\text{value}$.
