Radical Equations

Before you start, make sure you know: Special products (Secondary Year 2)
Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

A diver drops off the platform and takes 4 seconds to hit the water. What height did the diver jump from? The fall-time formula has the height inside a square root, so to solve for it you have to "undo" the radical. Squaring does the job, but sometimes it lets in solutions that don't work. By the end of this page you'll solve this problem and know how to check every result.

The method: isolate, raise, and check

Diagram of the method: isolate the radical, square both sides, solve the resulting equation, and check the solutions in the original equation. √(2x+15) = x ( )² 2x+15 = x² x² − 2x − 15 = 0 solve x = 5, x = −3 check each value in the original equation

Why do you have to check? Because $a=b$ implies $a^2=b^2$, but not the other way around: $3^2=(-3)^2$ even though $3\neq-3$. When you square, you can pick up solutions that didn't exist.

Substitution and quotients with radicals

Diagram of the substitution t equals the square root of x: the radical equation becomes quadratic in t, it is solved, and then we go back to x by squaring. x − 7√x + 10 = 0 t = √x t² − 7t + 10 = 0 t = 2, t = 5 x = t² x = 4, x = 25

Another frequent case is a quotient of radicals. Instead of squaring, you cross-multiply and group terms.

Domain and parameter: reasoning without solving

What is inside a square root must be $\ge0$. Sometimes this alone is enough to know that there is no solution without doing any computation.

A power line must connect a power plant $A$ located on one side of a straight river $4$ km wide to a town $B$ located on the opposite side, $10$ km downstream. The cost of laying the cable underwater is $100$ million pesos per km, and on land it is $60$ million pesos per km. If the cable crosses the river in a straight line to a point $P$ located $x$ km downstream and then goes along land to $B$, the total cost in millions of pesos is $C(x) = 100\sqrt{x^2 + 16} + 60(10 - x)$. Find the value of $x$ that makes the total cost exactly $920$ million pesos by solving the corresponding radical equation.
