Gaussian Elimination

Before you start, make sure you know: Systems of linear equations (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Systems of equations (Secondary Year 3)

Three schools buy balls for different sports, and each pays a different amount. How can you find the price of each ball? A system of three equations with three unknowns can't be solved by eye. Gaussian elimination transforms it, step by step, into another equivalent system (with the same solution) that is much easier: each equation has one fewer unknown than the one before. At the end, you just read the result from the bottom up. By the end of this page you will solve the ball problem.

An echelon-form system is solved from the bottom up

Diagram of an echelon-form system: each equation has fewer unknowns than the previous one, forming a descending staircase. x + 2y − z = 4 3y + z = 5 2z = 4

Transformations that do not change the solution

These are the same operations as the addition and subtraction (elimination) method you already know, but applied in a fixed order: they are used to create zeros below the diagonal, equation by equation.

Two operations between equations, E2 minus 2 times E1 and E3 plus E1, with the goal that E2 and E3 lose the x. E2 → E2 − 2·E1 E3 → E3 + E1 the goal: E2 and E3 lose the x

Clearing denominators

If the coefficients are fractions, it is best to get rid of them before triangulating. This is the second allowed operation: multiplying an entire equation by a nonzero number. Choose the least common multiple (LCM) of that equation's denominators, and multiply every term, including the constant term.

Setting up problems and solving them with Gaussian elimination

Now for the balls. One school pays $\$1{,}600$ for 2 soccer balls, 1 basketball and 1 volleyball; another pays $\$1{,}700$ for 1, 2 and 1; the third pays $\$1{,}500$ for 1, 1 and 2. With $x$, $y$ and $z$ as the prices of the soccer ball, basketball and volleyball, the system is $\begin{cases} 2x+y+z=1600 \\ x+2y+z=1700 \\ x+y+2z=1500 \end{cases}$.

Mixture problems

In a mixture there are two kinds of equations: a volume equation (the liters add up to the total) and a solute equation (liters of pure acid: volume × concentration, added up). The problem may also give an extra condition.

You can also find the coefficients of a polynomial: if the graph of $P(x)=ax^2+bx+c$ passes through a point $(x_0, y_0)$, then $ax_0^2+bx_0+c=y_0$, and each point gives one linear equation in $a$, $b$, $c$.

Classifying the system without finishing the solution

When putting the system in echelon form, something unexpected can happen in the last equation: all the unknowns can disappear.

Classification according to the last echelon equation: one unknown gives a unique solution, zero equals zero gives infinitely many, and zero equals seven gives none. 2z = 8unique: independent 0z = 0infinitely many: dependent 0z = 7none: inconsistent

If there are more equations than unknowns, you triangulate the same way: an equation that becomes $0=0$ is redundant, and one that gives $0=k\neq0$ makes the system inconsistent. And if some unknowns are missing from an equation, just order them and write a coefficient of $0$.

Longer problems and changes of variable

When the unknowns appear as $\frac1x$, $\frac1y$, $\frac1z$, the system is not linear in $x$, $y$, $z$, but it is linear in $u=\frac1x$, $v=\frac1y$, $w=\frac1z$. You solve with Gaussian elimination in $u$, $v$, $w$ and at the end you go back: $x=\frac1u$. The same goes for work per hour: if a machine does the fraction $a$ of the batch in one hour, it takes $\frac1a$ hours alone.
