Monotonicity and Extrema of a Function

A taco shop makes and sells more tacos as its production increases, and at first it earns more money. But if it overdoes it, costs skyrocket and profit starts to drop. There is one exact point where profit stops growing and starts decreasing: a maximum. To find it precisely, you first need to measure how a function changes: the average rate of change.

The Average Rate of Change

To find out how $f$ changes between two points $a$ and $b$, compare how much the function rises or falls with how far you moved along the $x$-axis.

Graph of a curved function with two points marked at a and b on the curve, joined by a dashed secant line that illustrates the average rate of change a b the secant line measures the average change between a and b

Increasing and Decreasing

The sign of the average rate of change tells you whether the function rises or falls on average. To talk about monotonicity rigorously, you need a definition that compares the function at any pair of points in the interval.

Graph of a function that rises and falls between a and b; the secant line has positive slope even though the function is not increasing on the whole interval (a, f(a))(b, f(b)) ab f(b) > f(a): the average rate of change is positive even thoughf is not increasing on all of [a, b]

Maxima and Minima of a Function

At a maximum or a minimum, the function changes direction: it stops increasing and starts decreasing, or the other way around. When reading a graph, the intervals of monotonicity are given in terms of $x$, and the extrema are given as points $(x_0, f(x_0))$.

Move the sliders and watch how the vertex changes:

Piecewise-Defined Functions

Some functions use one formula on one stretch and a different one on another. For example, a toll booth or a cell phone plan charges one way up to a certain limit and another way after that. They are called piecewise-defined functions, and each formula is called a branch.

To study their monotonicity and extrema:

  1. Study each branch only on its own interval. A parabola may have a vertex, but if that vertex falls outside the stretch, it doesn't count.

  2. Evaluate both branches at the point where they switch, to see whether the pieces connect or there is a jump.

  3. Compare what the function does just to the left and just to the right of the switch. There is an extremum there only if the direction changes (from falling to rising or vice versa).
