Fractions. Equivalent Fractions

Wilkin has read $\frac{3}{4}$ of a book for Language class. Yaritza says she has read $\frac{9}{12}$. Have they read the same amount? Even though the numbers are different, they might have: they are equivalent fractions.

What equivalent fractions are

Half a pizza, two fourths, or four eighths: it is the same amount, even though it is cut differently.

A juice company uses two different containers. Container A is filled to $\frac{3}{4}$ of its capacity and container B to $\frac{12}{16}$ of its own.

  1. a) Show graphically and by using cross products whether the filling fractions are equivalent.
  1. b) If container A has a capacity of $2$ liters and container B has a capacity of $1.5$ liters, do they contain the same amount of juice in liters? Do they still represent the same proportion with respect to their own containers? Explain the difference between "equivalent fraction" and "absolute amount".

Amplifying: making equivalent fractions

If you multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number, you get an equivalent fraction: you have split the whole into more pieces, but you are also taking more of them.

Simplifying and the irreducible fraction

Dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number is called simplifying. When you can't simplify any further, you have the irreducible fraction.

Finding the missing term

In a chain of equivalent fractions like $\frac{2}{3} = \frac{4}{\Box} = \frac{\Box}{15}$, you use cross products to find what is missing.

Step diagram solving the equation 3/7 = 21/x by setting up the cross product 3 · x = 7 · 21 to solve for x = 49. 3/7 = 21/x 3 · x = 7 · 21 x = 49

When the unknown is squared

Sometimes the missing term is a square, like $n^2$. Then, after the cross products, you have to find which number multiplied by itself gives a certain result. That number is the square root: since $3 \times 3 = 3^2 = 9$, the square root of $9$ is $3$, written $\sqrt{9} = 3$.

Fractions on the number line

A fraction is also a point on the line. To place it, you divide the segment between $0$ and $1$ into as many equal parts as the denominator says, and count as many parts as the numerator says.
