Operations with Decimal Numbers

You go to the corner store with a $\text{RD}\$200$ bill and buy a juice for $\text{RD}\$45.50$ and a loaf of bread for $\text{RD}\$18.75$. How much change do you get back? Decimals are worked with almost the same way as whole numbers, with one extra thing to watch: lining up the decimal point correctly.

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Vertical addition of 45.50 and 18.75 with the decimal points lined up in the same column, to get 64.25. 45.50 + 18.75 64.25 points lined up in the same column

Combined Operations

Problems with decimals often mix several operations. You follow the order of operations: first parentheses and brackets (from the inside out), then multiplications and divisions (from left to right), and finally additions and subtractions. The important thing is to set up the whole expression before calculating.

Rounding and Truncating Results
