Algebraic Language

A magician asks Wilkin: "Think of a number, add 5, multiply by 2, subtract 10, and divide by 2." No matter which number he thinks of, Wilkin ends up with the same number he started with. Magic? No: algebra. By the end of this section you will be able to prove it yourself.

Phrases with several steps

For long phrases, translate in parts, from the inside out, just like when you follow a recipe step by step. A letter represents a number that we don't know or that can change.

Breakdown of the phrase «three times the gems plus 50 bonus points» into the blocks 3x and + 50 to form 3x + 50. "three times the gems plus 50 bonus points" three times → 3x plus 50 → + 50 3x + 50

Some key words:

Phrase Expression
twice $x$ $2x$
half of $x$ $\dfrac{x}{2}$
the square of $x$ $x^2$
the cube of $x$ $x^3$
$x$ plus 7 $x + 7$
7 less than $x$ $x - 7$

Reading algebra in reverse

You also need to be able to go the other way: from the expression to the phrase. It is the same skill, but backwards. For example, if $x$ is what a T-shirt costs and $y$ is what a pair of pants costs:

Expression In everyday language
$x + y$ What the T-shirt and the pants cost together
$2x + 3y$ Twice the T-shirt plus three times the pants
$0.85 \times x$ 85% of the T-shirt's price (a 15% discount)
$3(x + y)$ Three times what the two items cost together

Monomials

A monomial is an expression made of a number multiplied by one or more letters, which may have exponents. It has three parts:

  • Coefficient: the number that multiplies. If you can't see it, it is $1$ (and if there is just a minus sign, it is $-1$).

  • Literal part: the letters with their exponents.

  • Degree: the sum of the exponents of the letters. A letter with no exponent counts as exponent $1$.

The monomial −5x²y with its parts marked: coefficient −5, literal part x²y and degree 3. −5x²y coefficient: −5 literal part: x²y degree: 2 + 1 = 3

Numerical value

The numerical value of an expression is the number you get when you substitute numbers for the letters and carry out the operations. Remember that between a number and a letter there is a hidden multiplication: $3x$ with $x = 2$ is $3 \times 2$.

And respect the order of operations: first powers, then multiplications and divisions, and finally additions and subtractions.

An expression can serve as a real-life formula. If a content creator earns $G = 20 \times v + 500$ pesos for $v$ videos, the $20$ is what they earn for each video and the $500$ is a fixed amount they receive regardless of the number of videos. With $v = 10$: $20 \times 10 + 500 = 700$ pesos.

When there is a fraction

A fraction cannot be calculated if the denominator equals $0$, because you cannot divide by zero. Look at $Q(x) = \dfrac{x^2 - 1}{x + 1}$:

$x$ $x^2 - 1$ $x + 1$ $Q(x)$
0 $-1$ $1$ $-1$
3 $8$ $4$ $2$
5 $24$ $6$ $4$

The results match $x - 1$. For $x = -1$ the denominator is $0$ and there is no value.

Expressions for figures and problems

The perimeter and area formulas are algebraic expressions. For a square of side $x$: perimeter $= 4x$ and area $= x^2$. For a rectangle of length $l$ and width $w$: perimeter $= 2l + 2w$ and area $= l \times w$.

A rectangle of length x + 2 and width x with its sides labeled with algebraic expressions. x + 2 x + 2 x x P = (x + 2) + x + (x + 2) + x P = 4x + 4

When the sides are expressions, you add all the sides and simplify: you combine letters with letters and numbers with numbers.

A border around a figure

For the area of a border (a path, a frame), calculate the total area (the big figure) and subtract the inner area.

Speed, time, and sharing

For motion problems use distance $=$ speed $\times$ time, with the time in a single unit. For example, $t$ hours and 30 minutes is $t + \frac{1}{2}$ hours. If the speed changes halfway through the time, calculate each half separately and add.

In sharing problems, the person who pays half contributes $\frac{x}{2}$. If 3 friends pay $x$ each and two others pay half each, the total is $3x + 2 \cdot \frac{x}{2} = 4x$.

Patterns: find the rule

In many problems a figure grows step by step and you have to find the expression that works for any step $n$, not just the first few.

If a pattern always grows by the same amount, the rule is: (how much it goes up each step) $\times\, n$ + (what is needed to reach the first term). If it doesn't always grow the same way, check whether the terms are squares: $1, 4, 9, 16, \ldots$ is $n^2$.
