Direct Proportionality

If at the corner store a bag of 6 rolls costs $\text{RD}\$72$, how much do you pay for 12? The more things you buy, the more you pay, and always at the same rate. When multiplying one quantity by a number makes the other one get multiplied by that same number, we have direct proportionality. By the end of this page we will answer that question.

What is direct proportionality?

At a video game store, 100 gems cost $\text{RD}\$15$. Look at the table and check that the quotient price ÷ gems is always the same:

Gems 100 200 300 400
Price (pesos) 15 30 45 60

Here $k = 15 \div 100 = 0.15$ pesos per gem. If you double the gems, you double the price.

Graph of direct proportionality: the points form a line that passes through the origin (0, 0) and relates gems to pesos. gemspesos always passes through (0, 0)

In math, we say that two quantities are directly proportional when, on multiplying one by a number, the other is multiplied by that same number. Analyze the following everyday situations and indicate which ones show direct proportion:

  1. a) The number of followers of a streamer and the number of likes they receive on a video (assuming all their followers click "like").
  2. b) A person's age and their height in centimeters.
  3. c) The number of pizza boxes you order and the total price you pay (if all pizzas cost the same).
  4. d) The speed of a car and the time it takes to reach its destination.
  5. e) The kilograms of apples you buy and how much they cost.

Direct rule of three

Another way to solve these problems is to set up a proportion: two equal ratios. If $\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d}$, then $a \times d = b \times c$ (cross products). Why? If you multiply both sides by $b$ and by $d$, the denominators disappear and that equality remains.

Rule of three diagram: the proportion 3 over 450 equals 5 over x, with crossed arrows below showing that 3 times x equals 450 times 5. 3450 = 5x 3 · x = 450 · 5x = 750 g

Another case: $\dfrac{2}{5} = \dfrac{10}{x}$ gives $2x = 50$, so $x = 25$.

Sharing and multi-step problems

Sometimes you have to share an amount proportionally. You add up the parts, find what corresponds to one part, and multiply.

In long problems, first find the constant $k$ (what corresponds to 1) and then use it. If the price changes, recalculate $k$. For example, if a rate of 2,250 pesos for 1,250 km goes up by 20 %, the new $k$ is $1.8 \times 1.2 = 2.16$ pesos per km.
