Inverse Proportionality
At a construction site in Santiago, 12 workers finish the job in 20 days. If only 8 work, it will take more days, not fewer. And the more taps you open to fill a tank, the fewer hours it takes. In these cases, when you multiply one quantity by a number, the other is not multiplied: it is divided. That is inverse proportionality.
What is inverse proportionality?
If you double the workers, the time is cut in half. If you triple them, the time is cut to one third. The graph is a curve that goes down and never touches the axes.

The constant product
To check whether a table shows inverse proportionality, multiply each pair of values. If all the products are equal, it does.

Inverse rule of three
Another way to think about it is reducing to the unit: first find out what happens with 1, and then with the value you are asked for.

Problems with the graph and with changes midway
On an inverse proportionality graph, every point satisfies that (horizontal value) × (vertical value) always gives the same number. Calculate that product and use it.
Sometimes the problem changes midway: first some workers work and then others. Think of the total work as the constant product (workers × days).

Extension: inversely proportional sharing
Sometimes you have to share an amount so that whoever has more of something receives less. The trick: share directly in proportion to the reciprocals of those numbers.
