The Set of Integers

In Constanza, in the early morning, the thermometer reads $-2$ °C. Yaritza owes $\text{RD}\$150$ to a friend. A diver in Samaná is $-20$ meters from sea level. With natural numbers you can't write any of this: you need integers, which add the negatives so we can talk about what is "below zero."

The set $\mathbb{Z}$

Set diagram showing the natural numbers inside the larger set of the integers. ℤ ..., −3, −2, −1 ℕ 0, 1, 2, 3, ...

For every negative situation there is a symmetric positive one: up/down, earning/owing, above/below sea level, before/after Christ.

For example, Pico Duarte is about $+3,100$ m high and Lake Enriquillo is about $-40$ m. A parking spot on the second basement level is level $-2$. Years work this way too: the year $42$ B.C. is $-42$ and the year $2024$ A.D. is $+2024$.

Coordinates in the plane

Integers are also used to locate points in a plane with two axes: a horizontal one ($x$, the x-axis) and a vertical one ($y$, the y-axis). Each point is written $(x, y)$.

Midpoint of a segment

The midpoint lies exactly halfway between two points. Its x-coordinate is halfway between the two x-coordinates, and its y-coordinate is halfway between the two y-coordinates. To find them, add the two coordinates and divide by $2$:

$$M\left(\frac{x_1 + x_2}{2},\ \frac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)$$

Why? Adding and dividing by $2$ is calculating the average of two numbers, and the average always lies between them.
