Algebraic Expressions

Your weekly allowance is 50 pesos, but you don't know how much your grandmother will give you on Sunday. If you call what she gives you $x$, you can already write how much money you will have in total: $50 + x$. You don't know the number, but you already know the calculation. That is algebra.

Letters that hold a number

Think of the letter as a closed box: there is a number inside, but you can't see it. You can do calculations with the box without opening it.

The unknown x as a closed box that holds a number; adding 15 forms the expression x + 15. x closed box = a number we can't see (today it may be 3, tomorrow 7...) with x gems and 15 more x + 15

In the world of video games, it is very common to translate situations into mathematical language. If we let $x$ be the number of gems you have in a chest, express the following situations in algebraic language:

  • Triple the number of gems you have.

  • The number of gems you will have if you find 15 more.

  • The number of gems you have left after spending half on a skin.

  • Double your gems minus 5 that you owe to a friend.

Translating phrases into expressions

Each key word becomes an operation. Memorize these equivalences:

Everyday language Algebraic language
Twice a number $2x$
Three times a number $3x$
Half of a number $\dfrac{x}{2}$
A number plus 5 $x + 5$
5 less than a number $x - 5$
The square of a number $x^2$
A number increased by 10% $x + 0.10x = 1.1x$
Three consecutive integers $x,\ x + 1,\ x + 2$

For the percent: 10% of $x$ is $0.10x$, and it is added to the original value. So a ticket of 300 pesos with a 10% charge costs $1.1 \times 300 = 330$ pesos.

For the consecutive numbers: each number is one unit greater than the previous one. Their sum is $x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 3x + 3$.

With geometry it's the same: the perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of its four sides, even if you don't know the measurements.

Rectangle with length L and width a whose perimeter is 2L + 2a. L L a a Perimeter = 2L + 2a

Lucía and her brother Adrián are comparing the money they have saved for the upcoming festival. Lucía has $x$ pesos. Express in algebraic language the money Adrián has in each of these independent cases:

  • Adrián has 720 pesos more than Lucía.

  • Adrián has twice as much as Lucía.

  • Adrián has 300 pesos less than triple what Lucía has.

  • If they combine their money and the municipality gives them an extra 1 200 pesos.

Patterns that depend on $n$

When a figure grows following the same rule every time, you can describe any step at once with an expression in $n$. Try the slider and notice how the number of pieces changes:

With 1 square you need 4 sticks; with 2 squares, 7; with 3, 10. Each new square adds 3 sticks, and there is always one loose stick at the start: the rule is $3n + 1$.

With the expression you can answer two questions: how many pieces step 25 has (you substitute $n = 25$) and at which step there are 40 pieces (you look for the $n$ that gives 40, by trial or by undoing the operations).

Parts of a monomial and like terms

The simplest expressions, with a single term, are called monomials. They have three parts:

Parts of a monomial: coefficient, variable part, and degree. 5 x³ coefficient variable part degree = 3 (sum of the exponents of the letters)

The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of its variable part: $-5ax^3$ has degree $1 + 3 = 4$. A number by itself, like $12$, has coefficient $12$, has no variable part, and its degree is $0$.

Two monomials are like terms if they have the same variable part: $3x$ and $5x$ are; $3x$ and $3x^2$ are not. You can only add or subtract like monomials, just as you can't add pesos and gems:

$$3x + 5x - x = (3 + 5 - 1)x = 7x$$

Simplifying with parentheses

If there is a minus sign in front of a parentheses, it changes the sign of all the terms inside. If there is a number, multiply it by each term:

$$-(2x + 5) = -2x - 5 \qquad 3(x - 1) = 3x - 3$$

A parentheses squared

$(a + b)^2$ means $(a + b)(a + b)$: you multiply each term of the first parentheses by each term of the second.

$$(a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2$$

You can see it with numbers: $(3 + 2)^2 = 25$ and also $3^2 + 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 2 + 2^2 = 9 + 12 + 4 = 25$. That is why $(a + b)^2$ is not $a^2 + b^2$: the middle term, $2ab$, is missing.

Multiplying and dividing monomials

To multiply monomials, you multiply the coefficients and add the exponents of the same letters. To divide, you divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents.

$$(3x^2)\cdot(4x^3) = 12x^{5} \qquad \frac{-15a^4b^2}{3a^2b} = -5a^2b$$

The reason: $x^2 \cdot x^3 = (x\cdot x)(x\cdot x\cdot x) = x^5$. And when dividing, the letters that appear on top and on the bottom cancel. Unlike addition, multiplying does not require the monomials to be like terms.
