Capacity

At the corner colmado (neighborhood grocery store) they sell water in "1.5 L" bottles and sodas in "355 mL" cans. At home, the tinaco (rooftop water tank) or the cistern is measured in thousands of liters, and at the gas station you buy fuel by the gallon. All of that is capacity: how much fits inside a container. How do we compare measurements that are so different? That is what you will learn here.

Complex and incomplex forms

A measurement in incomplex form uses a single unit ($1{,}250\ \text{mL}$). In complex form it is split among several units ($1\ \text{L}$, $2\ \text{dL}$ and $5\ \text{cL}$).

Liter and cubic decimeter

There is a very useful relationship: a cube with a $10\ \text{cm}$ edge has a volume of $1\ \text{dm}^3$ and a capacity of exactly $1\ \text{L}$. So, if you know the interior volume of a container in $\text{dm}^3$, you already know how many liters it holds.

$$1\ \text{dm}^3 = 1\ \text{L} \qquad 1\ \text{cm}^3 = 1\ \text{mL} \qquad 1\ \text{m}^3 = 1{,}000\ \text{L}$$

Why? $1\ \text{m}^3$ is $1{,}000\ \text{dm}^3$ ($10 \times 10 \times 10$), and each $\text{dm}^3$ is one liter.

Equivalence between the volume of a cube of one cubic decimeter and the capacity of one liter in a bottle. 1 dm³ = 1 L

Problems with capacities

Problems combine conversions, addition, sharing, and sometimes volumes. Always follow this order:

  1. Convert all quantities to one single unit (almost always liters).

  2. Do the operations (add, subtract, multiply, or divide).

  3. Convert the result to the unit the problem asks for.
