Sexagesimal system

The Águilas Cibaeñas game started at $7:30$ p.m. and lasted $2\ h\ 50\ min$. What time did it end? Neither the clock nor the protractor goes by tens: they go by sixties. This is called the sexagesimal system, and you will use it to solve this kind of question.

Hours, minutes, and seconds

Clock face with the sexagesimal equivalences of hours, minutes, and seconds and an example in complex form. 1 hour = 60 min 1 min = 60 s 17 h 45 min 30 s → hours, minutes, and seconds at the same time (complex form)

A measurement with several units, such as $2\ h\ 15\ min$, is in complex form. If it uses a single unit, such as $135\ min$, it is in incomplex form.

Degrees, minutes, and seconds

Angles are measured the same way: in degrees ($^\circ$), and each degree is divided into minutes ($'$) and seconds ($''$), also by sixties.

Angle of 45 degrees and 30 minutes drawn with an opening of about 45 degrees from the horizontal. 45° 30'

According to their opening, angles are classified as: acute (less than $90^\circ$), right (exactly $90^\circ$), obtuse (between $90^\circ$ and $180^\circ$), and straight (exactly $180^\circ$).

Converting from complex to incomplex form and back

To go from a larger unit to a smaller one, you multiply by 60. To go from a smaller one to a larger one, you divide by 60: the quotient is the larger units and the remainder is the smaller ones.

Conversion of 125 minutes to complex form by dividing by 60 to get 2 hours and 5 minutes. 125 min ÷ 60 2 h 5 min 125 = 60 × 2 + 5

Express the following durations in seconds and then order them from longest to shortest:

  • $t_1 = 2.5\text{ hours}$

  • $t_2 = 145\text{ minutes and } 30\text{ seconds}$

  • $t_3 = 9,200\text{ seconds}$

  • $t_4 = 2\text{ h } 30\text{ min } 15\text{ s}$

GOAL h min s × 60 × 60 × 3600 t₁ = 2,5 h t₂ = 145 min 30 s t₃ = 9200 s t₄ = 2 h 30 min 15 s

Adding and subtracting in the sexagesimal system

To add times or angles, you add each column separately (hours, minutes, and seconds; or degrees, minutes, and seconds). If a column reaches 60 or more, you convert it to the next unit.

Vertical addition of two time measurements in complex form with the step-by-step unit conversions. 2 h 45 min 15 s + 1 h 58 min 50 s 3 h 103 min 65 s 65 s = 1 min 5 s 104 min = 1 h 44 min total: 4 h 44 min 5 s

Schedules and durations

To find how long something lasts, you subtract the start time from the end time. To find what time something ends, you add the duration to the start time. If you go past $12:00$ you use p.m.; if you go past $24:00$, it is already the next day.

Back to the beginning: the game ended at $10:20$ p.m.

In problems, use the time difference given in the statement. If you are asked for the time here from the time there, subtract the difference (and if you get a negative number, add $24\ h$ and it is the previous day).

Complementary and supplementary angles

Two complementary angles forming a right angle and two supplementary angles forming a straight angle. add up to 90° (complementary) add up to 180° (supplementary)

For the supplement you do the same, but starting from $180^\circ = 179^\circ\ 59'\ 60''$.

A triangle also follows a rule: its three angles add up to $180^\circ$. If it is a right triangle it has a $90^\circ$ angle; if it has one angle greater than $90^\circ$, it is obtuse; if all its angles are less than $90^\circ$, it is acute. In a regular polygon with $n$ sides, each interior angle measures $\dfrac{(n-2) \times 180^\circ}{n}$.
