Valeria sells bracelets at an open-air market in Oaxaca. Her income depends on how many bracelets she sells, $I(x)$, and so do her costs, $C(x)$. Her profit is $I(x) - C(x)$: a new function built from two others. And if she also wants to know how many bracelets she needs to sell to earn a certain amount, she will have to "undo" a function. On this page you will learn to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and chain functions, and to find their inverse.

Profit, break-even point, and piecewise functions

When you subtract income and costs that have quadratic terms, the profit is a parabola. That lets you use what you already know about quadratic equations: the vertex gives the maximum and the roots give the break-even point.

When one of the functions has an absolute value, the sum ends up defined piecewise. You write the absolute value without the bars in each case.
