Continuity

Before you start, make sure you know: Piecewise functions (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic fractions (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

A delivery company charges $\$100$ to ship a package weighing up to $2$ kg. If the package weighs $1.99$ kg you pay one amount, and if it weighs $2.01$ kg, do you pay almost the same or is there a sudden jump? That question is about continuity: can you draw the graph without lifting your pen from the paper? In this section you will turn that idea into an exact criterion using limits. At the end we will come back to the delivery company.

Computing limits: substitution and one-sided limits

The limit of $f$ as $x\to a$ is the value that $f(x)$ gets close to as $x$ gets close to $a$, no matter what happens exactly at $a$.

When you are given a graph, the one-sided limit is the height the curve reaches from that side, even if there is an open circle or an isolated point there.

The indeterminate form $\frac00$

Sometimes substitution gives $\frac00$. This does not mean the limit does not exist: it means there is a factor that cancels and you must simplify first.

With square roots: the conjugate (extension)

The conjugate is also used for the $\infty-\infty$ indeterminate form with roots.

Limits at infinity and horizontal asymptotes

Rational functions: discontinuities and asymptotes

In a rational function the candidates for discontinuity are the values that make the denominator zero. Checking whether the numerator is also zero there decides whether it is removable or a vertical asymptote.

The asymptotes you need to be able to read are the vertical (where only the denominator is zero) and the horizontal (when the degrees are equal, $y=$ quotient of the coefficients; if the denominator has a higher degree, $y=0$).
