Approximation and Errors

Before you start, make sure you know: Scientific notation (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

At the open-air market, the scale reads $1.2$ kg of tomatoes. Is it exactly $1.2$ kg? No: it is an approximation with a certain precision. Between which values can the actual weight lie? Here you will learn to measure that precision.

Truncating and rounding

Irrational numbers, such as $\sqrt 7$, cannot be written out completely: approximations are always used. They can, however, be placed exactly on the number line using the Pythagorean theorem: $\sqrt2$ is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs $1$ and $1$; $\sqrt3$ is that of a triangle with legs $\sqrt2$ and $1$; and so on, since $(\sqrt{n})^2+1^2=n+1$. For $\sqrt 7$, legs $2$ and $\sqrt 3$ work, because $2^2+(\sqrt3)^2=4+3=7$. With the hypotenuse as the radius, you draw an arc down to the line.
