Logarithms

Before you start, make sure you know: Properties of exponents (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

Regina deposits money in a savings account with compound interest and wants to know how many years it will take to double her money. And how many times more energy does an earthquake of magnitude 8 release than one of magnitude 6? In both cases the unknown is "hidden" in an exponent. The tool for freeing it is the logarithm, the inverse operation of raising to a power.

What a logarithm is

Raising to a power and taking the logarithm are inverse operations: one undoes the other. That is why $\log_a(a^x)=x$ and $a^{\log_a b}=b$. The same is true of the functions $y=a^x$ and $y=\log_a x$: their graphs are symmetric about the line $y=x$.
