First- and Second-Degree Equations
Ximena sells bracelets at a street market in Puebla and wants to know how many she has to make to earn exactly what she needs; Diego launches a model rocket and wants to know at what moment it passes a certain height. Both problems turn into a first- or second-degree equation. On this page you will learn to solve both kinds, with and without denominators, and to decide which solutions make sense.
First-degree equations with denominators
When there are denominators, multiply the whole equation by the least common multiple (LCM) of all of them. That way the fractions disappear in a single step and the equality is preserved, because you multiply both sides by the same thing.

Completing the square and the quadratic formula
When the equation is complete, a classic idea is to build a perfect square trinomial. Since $(x+p)^2=x^2+2px+p^2$, the expression $x^2+bx$ needs $\left(\frac{b}{2}\right)^2$ added to become a square.
If you repeat this process with $ax^2+bx+c=0$ in general, you get the quadratic formula (also called Bhaskara's formula):
The solutions are the points where the parabola crosses the $x$-axis. Move the sliders and watch how many crossings there are.

A rectangular urban garden is to be designed in the center of Mexico City. The central space intended for lawn has dimensions of $15$ meters long by $10$ meters wide. Rational and radical equations
These equations reduce to a quadratic, but while transforming them extraneous solutions can appear: values that do not satisfy the original equation. That is why you must always check.
-
Rational: multiply by the LCM of the denominators (factor them first). Before that, note the values that make any denominator zero: they are forbidden.
-
Radical: isolate one root, square both sides, and repeat if another root remains. Squaring can introduce false solutions.

Intersection of a line and a parabola
The points where two graphs cross satisfy both equations at once. That is why their $y$-values are equal: you set the expressions equal, solve the resulting quadratic equation (it gives the $x$-coordinates), and substitute each $x$ into the line (or the parabola) to get its $y$. If $\Delta<0$, the graphs do not meet; if $\Delta=0$, the line is tangent.

A model aircraft club organises a flight test: a drone must make a round trip between two control points located at a distance of $12$ km. The drone flies at a constant airspeed. On the outward journey, the drone has a tailwind of $10$ km/h, but on the return journey it faces the same headwind. Knowing that the drone took a total of $54$ minutes to complete the round trip, calculate the drone's airspeed (in km/h) in still air.
