Integer Exponents

Before you start, make sure you know: Prime factorization (Secondary Year 2)
Before you start, make sure you know: Properties of exponents (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

A bank deposit, a population of bacteria, or the memory of a cell phone have something in common: they grow by multiplying by the same factor over and over. That repetition is exactly what a power describes. By the end of this page you will be able to decide, without a calculator, which of two investments of $\$10{,}000$ earns more after 24 months.

Applications: growth and comparison

Exponential growth: a curve that rises faster and faster as it is multiplied by the same factor every hour. ×3 every hour t = 0 t = n

Multiplying over and over by the same factor is a power: the base is the factor for each step and the exponent is the number of steps. The same thing happens with data storage: $1$ KB is $2^{10}$ bytes, and that is how you convert from one unit to the next.

Back to the beginning: to find out which investment earns more, it is enough to write each one as a power and compare the bases over the same period.

An investor analyses two financial products. In the first, their capital is multiplied by $1.02$ every month (compound interest). In the second, due to high volatility, the capital is multiplied by $1.05$ one month, but decreases by being multiplied by $0.98$ the following month, repeating this two-month cycle indefinitely.

If the investor deposits an amount $C$ for $2$ years ($24$ months), express using powers with integer exponents the final capital obtained in each option. Which of the two options is more profitable after those $24$ months? Justify your answer by comparing the bases of the resulting powers, once they are written with the same exponent.
