Differentiation rules
An online store wants to know how fast its profits change each hour, and the formula mixes powers, quotients, and exponentials. Computing a limit every time would be endless. With a handful of fixed rules you can differentiate almost any function you will meet in this course. At the end we will come back to this question.
Power, constant, and sum
Roots and fractions with $x$ in the denominator are first turned into powers: $\sqrt{x} = x^{1/2}$, $\sqrt[3]{x^2} = x^{2/3}$, $\dfrac{1}{x} = x^{-1}$.

An online clothing store has found that its daily profits in pesos follow the function $B(t) = -t^2 + 20t + 150$, where $t$ is the time in hours since the server was opened. Calculate the function $B'(t)$, which represents the rate at which profits change, and find its value when 4 hours have passed ($t = 4$).
Derivative and tangent line
The derivative $f'(a)$ is the slope of the tangent line to the graph at the point with $x$-coordinate $a$. Using the point-slope form $y - f(a) = f'(a)(x-a)$ you get the equation of the tangent. If $f'(a)>0$ the function is increasing at that point; if $f'(a)<0$, it is decreasing.
If you are asked for a tangent that is parallel to a given line, set $f'(x)$ equal to the slope of that line and solve for $x$.

Combining the rules
Almost every real function mixes rules. First identify the outermost operation (product? quotient? composite function?), apply its rule, and inside each derivative that appears, check whether you need the chain rule.
When a function has parameters ($a$, $b$, $k$), conditions on the derivative or on the value of the function give equations to find them. For a piecewise function to be differentiable at the junction point, it must be continuous there and the derivatives from both sides must match.

Rate of change in context
The derivative measures the instantaneous rate of change. In economics, the derivative of profit is marginal profit. If $B'(x)>0$, profit is increasing; if $B'(x)<0$, it is decreasing; where $B'(x)=0$ there may be a maximum or a minimum.
Back to the beginning: the online store with $B(t)=-t^2+20t+150$ has $B'(t)=-2t+20$. At 4 hours, $B'(4)=12$: profits are increasing at $\$12$ per hour, and they stop growing at $t=10$.
