Applications of the Derivative
An ice cream shop hires more employees and its profits go up... until they stop going up. How can you tell when hiring one more person is no longer worth it? Without trying values one by one, the derivative answers: its sign tells whether a function increases or decreases, and the second derivative tells how it curves. In this section we use them to study functions and to find a business's maximum profit.
Average rate of change and definition of the derivative
The average rate of change of $f$ between $x=a$ and $x=b$ is the slope of the secant line joining the points $(a, f(a))$ and $(b, f(b))$:
$$\text{average rate of change}=\frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}$$If the second point gets closer to the first, writing $b=a+h$ with $h$ smaller and smaller, the secant becomes the tangent. The slope we get is the instantaneous rate of change, that is, the derivative.

Reading the graph of the derivative
If you are given the graph of $f'$, you can reconstruct $f$:
-
Where $f'$ is above the $x$-axis, $f$ increases; where it is below, $f$ decreases.
-
Where $f'$ crosses the axis from $+$ to $-$, $f$ has a maximum; from $-$ to $+$, a minimum.
-
Where $f'$ increases, $f''>0$ and $f$ is concave up; where $f'$ decreases, it is concave down. The maxima and minima of $f'$ mark inflections of $f$.

Functions with parameters
When a function has letters to be determined, each piece of information in the problem becomes an equation:
-
"passes through $(x_0, y_0)$" gives $f(x_0)=y_0$;
-
"relative extremum at $x_0$" gives $f'(x_0)=0$;
-
"inflection point at $x_0$" gives $f''(x_0)=0$;
-
"tangent parallel to a line of slope $m$" gives $f'(x_0)=m$.
Then you solve the system of equations.
In a piecewise-defined function, for it to be differentiable at the point where the formula changes you need two things: it must be continuous there (both pieces have the same value) and the derivatives of both pieces must agree.

Study the continuity and differentiability of the following piecewise function throughout its domain. If parameters exist, determine the values of $a$ and $b$ so that the function is differentiable at $x = 2$:
$$f(x) = \begin{cases} \frac{x^2 - a}{x - 1} & \text{if } x \le 2 \\ 2x + b & \text{if } x > 2 \end{cases}$$Once the parameters have been found, calculate the equation of the normal line to the curve at the point $x = 0$.
Asymptotes
An asymptote is a line that the graph approaches without touching it (in the sense that matters) as $x$ or $y$ grows without bound. They are read using limits.
-
Vertical $x=c$: if as $x\to c$ (from one side or the other) $f(x)\to\pm\infty$. In a rational function, this happens where the denominator equals $0$ and the numerator does not.

Velocity and acceleration
The derivative is an instantaneous rate of change. If $s(t)$ is the position, $v(t)=s'(t)$ is the velocity and $a(t)=v'(t)=s''(t)$ is the acceleration. The drone is stopped when $v=0$; it speeds up if $v$ and $a$ have the same sign and slows down if they have opposite signs.

Optimization problems
General steps: (1) define the variable and write the function to optimize; (2) use the condition of the problem to reduce it to a single variable; (3) differentiate and set equal to $0$; (4) check with $f''$ or with the sign change; (5) answer with units. If the variable lies in a closed interval $[a,b]$, also compare the values at the endpoints $a$ and $b$: the absolute maximum or minimum is among the critical points and the endpoints of the interval.

A intercity bus company has determined that the total cost (in pesos) of operating its fleet for one day depends on the average speed $v$ (in km/h) at which the buses travel, according to the function:
$$C(v) = \frac{3000}{v} + 0.2v^2 + 500$$The figure shows the graph of $C(v)$ and, shaded, the interval of speeds $[20, 60]$ used in part c).

- c) If, due to traffic regulations, the average speed must lie in the interval $[20, 60]$ km/h, what would be the maximum cost and the minimum cost in that interval?

We wish to fence a rectangular enclosure intended for a playground in a housing development. The enclosure must have an area of $600 \text{ m}^2$. One of the sides of the rectangle adjoins a building and does not need fencing.
