Before you start, make sure you know: Basic concepts (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

An app on your phone tracks your data usage during the month. Before graphing or interpreting any function, it helps to always ask it the same questions: for which values of $x$ does it exist? What values does it take? Does it have any symmetry? Does it repeat? Where does it cross the axes? Where is it positive and where negative? Where does it increase and where does it decrease? Answering them in an orderly way is studying the characteristics of a function, and by the end of this page you will see that they are enough to describe a graph without graphing it.

A team of biologists is studying the viability of a population of microorganisms in a controlled environment. The potential growth rate of the colony, as a function of the water temperature $x$ (in degrees Celsius), is modeled by the expression:

$$f(x) = \frac{\sqrt{x^2 - 16}}{\ln(x - 5)}$$

Determine, with reasoning, the domain of definition of this function, taking into account the restrictions of the square root, the natural logarithm and the denominator of the fraction. Interpret the result by stating from what temperature it is possible to start the experiment.

A streaming platform offers two monthly plans. The "Premium" plan costs 15 pesos flat rate per month and includes 100 hours of content. Beyond the 100th hour, the user must pay 0.50 pesos for each additional hour.

  1. Write the algebraic expression of the piecewise function that relates the monthly cost $C$ to the viewing hours $h$.

  2. Plot the graph of the function.

  3. Determine the range of the function if the maximum number of hours a user can watch per month is 300.

You can do it on paper and send a photo with your answer.

Increasing and decreasing behavior, extrema, and concavity

Three more questions are answered by looking at the graph, without formulas:

  • Where is it increasing? Moving along it from left to right, the curve goes up. Where is it decreasing? The curve goes down.

  • Where is there a relative maximum or a relative minimum? They are the points where the curve goes from rising to falling (maximum) or from falling to rising (minimum): the highest or lowest point in its neighborhood, even if the graph reaches higher or lower elsewhere.

  • How does it curve? If it looks like a smile (∪) it is concave up; if it looks like a frown (∩) it is concave down.

Graph with a relative maximum at the point (−1, 2) and a relative minimum at the point (1, −2); concave down to the left of the origin and concave up to the right. relative maximum (−1, 2) relative minimum (1, −2) −1 1
