Annuity and Monthly Payment Calculations

Before you start, make sure you know: Logarithms (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Geometric progressions (Secondary Year 3)

Ximena wants to save for her graduation trip by depositing a fixed amount each month. Her brother Diego, on the other hand, wants to buy a computer in monthly installments. Is it the same math? Almost: in both cases there is a series of equal payments at regular intervals. This is called an annuity or rent, even if the payments are monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly. At the end of the page you will see what the difference is between saving and owing.

The Rate for Each Period

Before using any formula, the rate and the term must be in the same unit as the payments. If you pay every month, you need the monthly rate $i$ and the number of months $n$.

The Future Value of Savings with Equal Deposits

Ximena deposits $\$150$ at the end of each month into an account that pays 0.3% per month. Each deposit earns interest only from the moment it goes in. The first one earns 23 months of interest, the second 22, and so on, until the last one, which earns none.
